Kirkcaldy striker Kieron Bowie has joined Serie A club Sassuolo on a season-long loan with an option to buy after leaving relegated Hellas Verona.
The 23-year-old forward joined Verona from Hibernian midway through last season and scored four league goals, including strikes at Allianz Stadium against Juventus and at San Siro against champions Inter.
Despite those goals and an assist against Parma, he could not prevent Verona's demotion to Serie B. Scotland manager Steve Clarke subsequently left Bowie out of his squad for the World Cup in the United States, where Scotland struggled in front of goal.
Bowie's performances in Italy earned him a respected reputation, leading to his move to Sassuolo last week.
Francesco Palmieri and squad options
Sassuolo sporting director Francesco Palmieri praised the young Scottish attacker following his arrival. "In just a few months in Italy he has shown his value," Palmieri said. "He has important characteristics and is still quite young. I'm convinced that he can contribute to this group and help us take steps forward."
Bowie links up with fellow Scot Josh Doig at the Mapei Stadium. Left-back Doig moved from Hibernian to Verona in 2022 before joining Sassuolo a year and a half later.
The duo are among seven Scottish players currently under contract at Serie A clubs, alongside Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour at Napoli, Lewis Ferguson at Bologna, Che Adams at Torino, and Lennon Miller at Udinese.
Doig lost his starting place in the second half of last season to Ulisses Garcia, who has since returned to parent club Marseille following his loan spell.
Sassuolo also made a managerial change this summer, appointing Alberto Aquilani to succeed Fabio Grosso after Grosso departed for Fiorentina. Aquilani, a 42-year-old former Liverpool midfielder with two seasons of Serie B coaching experience, made Bowie his first major signing.

"He's a young and important player, with useful abilities that we are lacking right now," Aquilani said of Bowie. "He will definitely give us a hand."
Sassuolo's squad features former Manchester United and Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic, who is 38 years old and just four years younger than Aquilani. The team also includes star winger Armand Lauriente and club legend Domenico Berardi.
Sassuolo has operated as a launchpad club for young talent since earning promotion to Serie A in 2013 and qualifying for European competition two years later under Eusebio di Francesco. "They explained how the club works, the importance of youngsters... it's great to have so many young guys around, I can be useful and explain a few things to help them develop," Matic said of his decision to join last summer.
Italy international players including Giacomo Raspadori, Francesco Acerbi, Manuel Locatelli, Gianluca Scamacca, Matteo Politano, and Davide Frattesi all established themselves at Sassuolo. Defender Tarik Muharemovic recently completed a £34million move to Leeds United.
Sassuolo has been relegated only once since reaching the top flight in 2013, winning the Serie B title in 2024-25 before finishing 11th in Serie A last season under Grosso.
Club structure and home ground
The club experienced executive changes this summer following the departure of chief executive officer and general manager Giovanni Carnevali, who joined Juventus after 12 years in his role. During Carnevali's tenure, Sassuolo established itself in Serie A, qualified for Europe, and opened a new training facility.
Sassuolo is owned by the Squinzi family, owners of chemical product manufacturer Mapei. The town of Sassuolo, located in the Emilia-Romagna region near Modena and Bologna, has a population of around 40,000.
The club plays its home matches at the Mapei Stadium in Reggio Emilia, 30 kilometers (19 miles) away, because its local stadium is too small. Sassuolo is one of only five Serie A clubs that own their stadium, alongside Juventus, Udinese, Frosinone, and Atalanta.
Due to its small local support, home fans are frequently outnumbered by visiting crowds. All four of Bowie's goals for Verona and his single assist came in away matches.
Bowie's main competition for the central striker position will be Andrea Pinamonti, a 27-year-old Inter youth product who scored nine goals for Sassuolo last season and has reached double figures in three of the last five Serie A campaigns.
Pre-season expectations and tactical style
Sassuolo continued building its squad for the 2026-27 season by signing young midfielder Vasilije Adzic from Juventus on Monday to bolster Aquilani's tactical options.
Aquilani had a playing career with Roma and Fiorentina before having a spell at Sassuolo near the end of his playing days. He led Catanzaro to the Serie B playoff final last season after taking a sabbatical year to study coaching methods.
"[Roberto] De Zerbi is a friend, I talk to him almost daily, and whenever I could, I went to Marseille," Aquilani told Gazzetta dello Sport. "[Cesc] Fabregas had piqued my interest, so I went to see him at work. He inspired me, I wanted to talk to him."
Following a passing move in a pre-season friendly, Gazzetta dello Sport published a clip with the headline: "Aquilani like Guardiola? Sassuolo's move is out of a video game."
"Aquilani definitely knows football...together we want to go to Europe," Matic said of the new manager. Aquilani later responded with a smile: "He was joking. It's fine, ambition must be part of our way of thinking."
Bowie will look to develop in Serie A alongside teammates like Berardi and Lauriente under Aquilani's management.
