Kylian Mbappé scored a hat-trick as Real Madrid secured a 4-1 home victory over Real Sociedad at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium on Wednesday.
The result gave manager José Mourinho his second consecutive win in La Liga, putting Real Madrid equal on points at the top of the Spanish league table.
Mourinho was managing his first home fixture at the Bernabéu in 13 years, returning to the host dugout for the delayed first-round clash. The Portuguese coach watched Mbappé, who finished as the top scorer at the 2026 World Cup, deliver a dominant performance.
Mbappé opened the scoring in the 40th minute before adding further goals in the 60th and 80th minutes. It was his first hat-trick at the Santiago Bernabéu since February 2025, when he scored three goals against Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League.
Goals from Vinicius and Sucic
Real Sociedad had briefly leveled the score late in the first half through Luka Sucic. The Croatian midfielder found the net in the 44th minute to bring the Basque visitors back into the match before the interval.
Real Madrid responded in the second half to reclaim control of the game. Brazilian forward Vinícius Júnior extended the lead for the home side by scoring their third goal in the 68th minute, preceding Mbappé's final strike.
Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva started for Real Madrid and featured throughout the contest before being substituted near the end of the match. For Real Sociedad, Portuguese winger Gonçalo Guedes entered the field as a second-half substitute.
La Liga standings
The victory leaves Real Madrid with six points from two matches at the start of the Spanish domestic season. They currently share top spot in La Liga alongside Andalusian sides Sevilla and Real Betis.
