Midfielder Laurent Mendy delivered a star performance as Heart of Midlothian defeated St Johnstone in Saturday's Scottish Premiership match at Tynecastle Park.
The 29-year-old Frenchman played just under an hour before being substituted to a standing ovation in the 57th minute. Hearts secured the victory through an early strike from teenage forward James Wilson and a first-half own goal by St Johnstone debutant Enes Alic.
The result capped a busy week for Heart of Midlothian, who entered the weekend following a grueling victory over Austrian side Rapid Vienna in the UEFA Europa Conference League on Wednesday. Mendy had made his return from injury in that European fixture, coming off the bench after missing weeks with a muscle problem.
Laurent Mendy's home debut performance
Mendy was outstanding during his 57 minutes on the pitch, demonstrating why Hearts pursued his signature throughout the year. Operating in central midfield, he repeatedly plugged defensive gaps and won back possession for the home side.
The midfielder showed high confidence on the ball, even opting to dribble past an opposing attacker inside his own penalty area midway through the first half. While the moment caused anxiety among supporters inside the Edinburgh stadium, Mendy successfully cleared the danger.
Mendy was equally influential in attack and came close to scoring on three separate occasions. A powerful close-range header from a set-piece forced St Johnstone goalkeeper Toby Steward into a fine save, before a long-range strike deflected inches wide of the post.
Referee Ryan Lee also disallowed a Mendy goal after ruling that the midfielder committed a soft foul on Steward while rising to head the ball home.
Six minutes before the half-time interval, Mendy celebrated what appeared to be his maiden goal for Hearts when he attacked the back post. However, replays showed the ball was turned into the net off the outstretched leg of St Johnstone debutant Enes Alic, who was credited with an own goal.
The Bosnian defender's accidental touch gave Hearts a two-goal cushion before the break, despite Mendy initially claiming the finish as his own.
James Wilson scores early opener
Hearts had opened the scoring early in the match through 18-year-old striker James Wilson. The teenager produced a clinical finish to net his third goal of the current campaign.
The opening goal stemmed from a defensive blunder by St Johnstone defender Zach Mitchell. Mitchell inexplicably passed the ball directly to former St Johnstone winger Josh McPake, who provided the assist for Wilson to score.
Wilson's bright start to the season follows a challenging period for the youngster. His only league start during the previous campaign came in a 3-3 draw against Motherwell, where he was substituted at the half-time break.
The forward subsequently spent the second half of last season on loan with the youth academy at English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur. Wilson displayed excellent movement off the ball against St Johnstone before being substituted alongside Mendy on 57 minutes.
Replacing Beni Baningime and Cammy Devlin
Mendy's arrival at Tynecastle comes as Hearts look to rebuild their midfield following the departures of star duo Beni Baningime and Cammy Devlin. The pair were instrumental in Hearts' title challenge last season, with Devlin providing defensive toughness and Baningime offering composure on the ball.
To replace their contrasting skill sets, Hearts utilized their Jamestown Analytics recruitment system to identify Mendy as a target. Hearts initially submitted a transfer bid to English club Forest Green Rovers in January, but the offer was rejected before a deal was finally completed during the summer transfer window.
Mendy has experienced a rapid rise through the English football pyramid. As recently as 2021, the French midfielder was playing for Macclesfield FC in the North West Counties League, the ninth tier of English football.
He then followed manager Robbie Savage to National League side Forest Green Rovers in Gloucestershire. Mendy was appointed club captain at Forest Green and led the team to the National League play-offs, where they lost to Hertfordshire club Boreham Wood.
Savage praised the midfielder prior to his departure, describing Mendy as a "fantastic player and a fantastic person" before he sealed his move to Scottish football.
Mendy had suffered a setback earlier in the season when a muscle injury sidelined him following pre-season appearances in defeats against Aberdeen and Portuguese club Benfica. His performance on Saturday marked his first domestic start for Hearts.
Claudio Braga transfer speculation
While Mendy made his mark, Portuguese forward Claudio Braga endured a frustrating afternoon. Braga was named the Scottish Premiership Player of the Year last season after a stellar individual campaign.
Speculation surrounding Braga's future has cooled with only a few days remaining before the summer transfer window closes. Although Braga displayed his usual work rate against St Johnstone, little went right for him in the final third of the pitch.
Hearts supporters hope that a quiet performance might deter potential suitors from making late transfer bids, allowing the Portuguese attacker to remain at Tynecastle.
St Johnstone fight back through Ruari Paton
Despite trailing by two goals at the break, St Johnstone dominated large spells of the match under Finnish manager Simo Valakari. The Perth-based club showed composure in building play from the back despite Mitchell's early mistake.
St Johnstone reduced the deficit early in the second half when forward Ruari Paton produced a well-taken finish to score. However, Valakari's side struggled to convert their territorial dominance into further scoring chances.
The match was St Johnstone's first competitive fixture in three weeks. The Perth side will now prepare for a busy period featuring three matches over the next ten days as they seek to turn positive performances into Premiership points.
