According to ESPN insider Brian Windhorst, representatives for the four-time MVP have been going back and forth with the Lakers to iron out a fresh contract extension. Windhorst said on Tuesday that James' intention is to play, and that the focus right now is making a deal with the Lakers.
Windhorst said James is allowed to negotiate with the Lakers, and that he believes they are negotiating. Windhorst added that in the next 14 days, he thinks James is going to try to make a deal with the Lakers.
James holds a lucrative player option that allows him to become an unrestricted free agent and test the open market this summer. Should a resolution be reached over the upcoming fortnight, the NBA's all-time leading scorer would officially return to Southern California for a 24th professional season.
Injuries tested Lakers' depth
The contract talks indicate that James remains committed to bringing another championship banner to Crypto.com Arena, despite the team's postseason depth being severely tested by a series of costly injuries to key starters.
The Lakers were forced to navigate the bulk of their postseason run without superstar guard Luka Doncic, who was unable to recover from a late-season hamstring injury in time to salvage the team's playoff aspirations. Austin Reaves returned to the lineup for the second round, but James was ultimately forced to shoulder the load, which visibly took a physical toll on the veteran.
