Former Real Madrid and Barcelona star Luis Figo has called for FIFA president Gianni Infantino to resign immediately following a controversy over private investment. Writing in a column for the Daily Mail, the 2000 Ballon d'Or winner said the Swiss official had shown the worst, most sneaky, and most selfish behavior he had ever seen in his career.
Figo stated that Infantino lied, cheated, and attempted to enrich himself and his friends at the expense of football. He added that the FIFA president lacked transparency regarding the high returns sought by private investment funds during an aborted attempt to open the governing body to private investors.
Internal pressure at FIFA
The Portuguese legend concluded that Infantino had debased the FIFA presidency and must step down right now to save the sport. Internal pressure is also growing against Infantino following the resignation of his senior advisor last week.
In addition, FIFA secretary general Mattias Grafstrom expressed regret over a series of sad and condemnable events in a letter sent to the organization's staff members.
