Lyon secure 2-0 victory at Toulouse in Ligue 1 opener

Olympique Lyonnais opened their Ligue 1 season with a 2-0 victory against Toulouse FC at the Stadium on Saturday, August 22, 2026.

Second-half goals from Nartey and substitute Malick Fofana earned all three points for Lyon following a scoreless first half in Toulouse.

Second-half rotation and opening goal

Lyon manager Paulo Fonseca chose to rotate his starting lineup heavily for the opening match, resting several key players ahead of the team's upcoming Champions League playoff second-leg fixture against Fenerbahce. Lyon created few clear chances during a quiet opening 45 minutes.

Fonseca adjusted his tactics after an hour, making a double substitution in the 61st minute as Malick Fofana replaced Duranville and Sulc came on for Humbert.

The tactical change paid off in the 68th minute when Nartey finished off a team move in a tight area by placing a first-time shot low into the bottom corner to put Lyon 1-0 ahead. Nartey was immediately substituted for Morton in the 70th minute.

Fofana doubles Lyon lead in closing stages

Lyon created further opportunities as Danish midfielder Bidstrup missed a chance inside the penalty area in the 73rd minute, lifting his effort over the crossbar. In the 80th minute, Boudache misplaced a pass inside the box, failing to find three unmarked Lyon teammates in space.

Toulouse attempted to push forward late in the match by playing long balls to their attackers in the 83rd minute, but Lyon doubled their lead two minutes later.

In the 85th minute, Tolisso played the ball to Fofana, who beat his marker with a sharp turn and feint before placing a low shot into the far corner past Toulouse goalkeeper Reste to make it 2-0.

Lyon almost added a third in the 87th minute when a Bacher header from a corner narrowly missed the target. The match ended after five minutes of stoppage time.

Opening day standings

The victory puts Lyon third in the Ligue 1 standings with three points, while Toulouse sit 16th with zero points following the opening round of fixtures. Elsewhere on the opening day, Le Mans drew 2-2 with Brest.
