Manchester United beat rivals Leeds United 5-4 on penalties following a 1-1 pre-season friendly draw at a sold out Croke Park.
The victory at the stadium in Dublin earned Michael Carrick's side the pre-season Boyle Sports Cup trophy.
Noussair Mazraoui converted the winning penalty kick in the shootout, sending Leeds goalkeeper Cairns the wrong way to secure victory after James Justin struck the crossbar for Leeds.
Joshua Zirkzee opened the scoring for Manchester United in the 16th minute before Leeds midfielder Brenden Aaronson equalised in the 29th minute to leave the sides level at full time.
Bruno Fernandes was the only Manchester United player to miss from the spot in the shootout, while Wilson also failed to convert for Leeds.
Penalty shootout and match action
Manchester United entered the match with Matheus Cunha named on the bench, while Leeds United handed a start to new goalkeeper James Trafford.
United dominated early exchanges and took the lead when forward Zirkzee scored after 16 minutes. Leeds responded inside the opening half hour, with Aaronson leveling the score in the 29th minute.
With no extra time played in the friendly contest, the match moved straight to a penalty shootout. After Fernandes missed his kick for United, Wilson failed to convert for Leeds to keep the shootout level at 4-4.
Defender Justin then stepped up for Leeds, striking his penalty off the crossbar. Mazraoui followed for Manchester United and calmly dispatched his spot-kick past Cairns to claim the spoils.
Carrick reflects on Rashford and performance
Manchester United manager Michael Carrick expressed satisfaction with his team's performance, noting that United created numerous scoring opportunities during the opening half.
Speaking to ITV Sport after the match, Carrick praised the contribution of his squad and the young players who featured in the second half.
"First-half we were really dangerous and could've had a number of goals. We played some really good football," Carrick said. "They came back into the game, and in the second-half there were a few changes and it was important to get some minutes in some of our lads. The young lads did well, it was everything we expected of them. Winning the game is always nice."
Carrick also highlighted the return of forward Marcus Rashford, who featured after returning to training earlier in the week.
"He's our player. He's come back great, like any other player. I've known him a long time, he gives us something a bit different," Carrick said of Rashford. "He's been in great spirits since he's been back, he's been back two or three days."
Farke and Aaronson praise Trafford impact
Leeds United manager Daniel Farke expressed satisfaction with his team's display against Premier League opposition, pointing to their improved performance after the interval.
Speaking to ITV Sport, Farke said: "It was a good friendly for both teams. A good performance, and we pushed in the second-half. To come away with a good draw against a team like Man Utd is good for the confidence."
Farke reserved special praise for new goalkeeper Trafford, confirming that the club had pursued the signing over an extended period.
"James Trafford is a player who has the potential to be world class. If he keeps going like this he will rise to the top," Farke told ITV Sport. "We were so desperate not just this season but also before to sign him, and finally it went through. He can make a big difference and to have a top-class No 1 for a team in our situation, our second season, I pushed very hard for this signing."
Leeds goalscorer Aaronson reinforced his manager's assessment of Trafford's quality when speaking after the match.
"We added quality in spots we needed to, we're going to continue to get better and better and we need to keep doing this," Aaronson told ITV Sport. "From what I've seen, James Trafford is top. In training yesterday I was blown away how much quality he has. The expectation is to get better, and as this club we want to keep making the fans proud."
Given assesses Manchester United midfield business
Former Manchester City and Newcastle United goalkeeper Shay Given evaluated Manchester United's midfield recruitment while speaking to BOYLE Sports.
Given addressed questions regarding whether United had weakened their midfield options by choosing not to pursue deals for Sandro Tonali or Bruno Guimaraes, pointing instead to the signing of Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa.
"Have Manchester United weakened their midfield by not trying to sign Sandro Tonali or Bruno Guimaraes? Well, I think Youri Tielemans is a really good signing, and remember Aston Villa only had to sell him because of financial reasons, because they signed him on a free," Given said.
"That’s frustrating for Villa because they have two billionaire owners but that’s what the rules say," Given added. "To sign Tielemans for £35million when Sandro Tonali was £100million, well that’s actually a really good piece of business because United are getting a really experienced player for club and country."
Arsenal defeat Como on penalties
In Wednesday's other pre-season fixture, Arsenal completed their summer schedule by defeating Italian side Como on penalties following a 1-1 draw.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta named Eberechi Eze in the starting lineup. Myles Lewis-Skelly gave Arsenal the lead in the 33rd minute before Gabriel Baturina equalised for Como in the 43rd minute.
In the resulting shootout, Martin Odegaard, Kai Havertz, Bruno Guimaraes, and Christos Tzolis converted their spot-kicks for Arsenal, while Noni Madueke failed to score.
Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya entered the match as a substitute and saved Alvaro Morata's penalty kick to secure victory, after Ivan Smolcic had missed for Como.
Final pre-season tests and Community Shield
With nine days remaining until the return of the Premier League season, both Manchester United and Leeds United will complete their warm-up campaigns at the weekend.
Manchester United face Italian club AC Milan, managed by former United boss Ruben Amorim, while Leeds United take on German side FC Augsburg in their final pre-season fixture.
Arsenal turn their focus to Sunday, August 16, when they face Manchester City in the FA Community Shield at Wembley Stadium for the campaign's first domestic silverware.
