Manchester City beat Manchester United 1-0 in a controversial Manchester derby at Old Trafford, with Erling Haaland's second-half goal settling a match that City played more than an hour of with ten men after Phil Foden was sent off before half-time.
Foden was shown a red card for kicking out at United captain Bruno Fernandes, though replays appeared to show Fernandes had also kicked out at the City midfielder. The flashpoint left City to see out the majority of the game a man short.
United could not make their numerical advantage count. Haaland put City ahead in the second half, though the goal was initially ruled out for offside on the field. A VAR check reversed the decision and Haaland was ruled onside, though the involvement of Enzo Fernandez, who had rushed towards the ball from an offside position, did not appear to be taken into account in the review.

Senne Lammens was given 6 in goal, having to retrieve the ball from his own net after an hour but making a smart save to turn Fernandez's shot against the post. Diogo Dalot (6.5) nearly got caught out by Antoine Semenyo in the first half but otherwise dealt with the City winger well.
Harry Maguire (6) kept Haaland quiet until the goal and was booked for a shove on Fernandez, while Lisandro Martinez (6) snuffed out an early Haaland run and was inevitably drawn into the confrontation over Foden. Patrick Dorgu (6), deputising for Luke Shaw, marked Rayan Cherki and Iliman Ndiaye well but was out of position for Haaland's goal.
Youri Tielemans (6.5) picked out some good passes but had far less time on the ball than in United's midweek European game, and became the first United player substituted. Kobbie Mainoo (7) put in another energetic display and rattled the post with a second-half effort. Bryan Mbeumo, who had scored in United's previous two league games, was rated just 4.5 after offering little threat and missing a glaring chance to equalise in stoppage time.
Bruno Fernandes was marked down to 5.5, his main contribution being the flashpoint with Foden that left him fortunate to avoid a booking, or worse, himself. Marcus Rashford (7) was named United's brightest player and hit the post with a free-kick, while Matheus Cunha, deployed as a false nine ahead of Benjamin Sesko, scored just 5 after dropping too deep too often.
Substitute Sesko, who replaced Tielemans in the 67th minute, was given 6, while Joshua Zirkzee came on for Rashford in the 82nd minute. Head coach Michael Carrick, who began his spell in charge of United with a win in this fixture, was rated 5 for failing to capitalise on the red card as City's ten men remained too comfortable.

Gianluigi Donnarumma was City's top performer with an 8, producing a stunning stoppage-time save to deny Mbeumo and also sweeping up when Fernandes released Rashford. Matheus Nunes, making his first Premier League start of the season, was also rated 8 for a composed display against Rashford, and Marc Guehi (8.5) was praised for his finest week in a City shirt following performances against Porto and now United.
Ruben Dias (7) organised well and looked cleaner in possession than in previous weeks, while Josko Gvardiol (7) was credited for restricting Mbeumo to barely a mention until very late in the game. Elliot Anderson (8) covered large areas of the pitch on his own for long spells, and Enzo Fernandez (8) grew into the match after Haaland's opener and hit the post himself.
Phil Foden was rated the lowest of the afternoon at 3, his petulance in kicking out at Fernandes letting his team down regardless of whether the red card was warranted. Rayan Cherki (6) showed some nice touches before being substituted at half-time, and Antoine Semenyo (6.5) put in a shift down the left while always posing a threat.
Haaland was rated 8, described as waking up after his goal and bursting into life to become more of a focal point. Substitute Iliman Ndiaye, who replaced Cherki at half-time, was rated 7, while Nico O'Reilly came on for Fernandez in the 82nd minute. Manager Enzo Maresca received an 8, with the half-time change of Cherki for Ndiaye credited for giving City more of a foothold, and the way his side navigated more than an hour with ten men put down to his management.
