Ipswich Town take early lead
Defensive vulnerabilities continued to affect Manchester United, particularly on the left side where Luke Shaw struggled following a difficult performance in the defeat at Hull City. Less than half an hour into the match, Abdul Fatawu outpaced Shaw on the right wing and sent a cross into the penalty area.
Davis, left unmarked by Bryan Mbeumo, met the cross with a first-time strike that beat United goalkeeper Senne Lammens and entered the net off the underside of the crossbar.
Lammens had earlier prevented Ipswich Town, based in Suffolk in East Anglia, from taking the lead by making vital saves to deny early attempts from Julio Enciso and Daizen Maeda.

Fernandes equalises before half-time

Matheus Cunha seized the ball and delivered an early pass past Sasa Lukic into the path of Fernandes, who took one touch before driving a powerful shot past Ipswich goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen.
Second-half comeback and goal controversy
Early in the second half, Mbeumo hit the crossbar from point-blank range before Manchester United transformed the match with two goals in the space of five minutes.
United went ahead through a controversial incident when defender Harry Maguire challenged Chuba Akpom just outside the penalty area and clearly used his hands to control the ball.
Maguire advanced into the penalty box and fired a low shot that was travelling wide until it struck Ipswich defender Jacob Greaves. The deflection sent the ball past Scherpen into the net and was officially recorded as an own goal by Greaves, which legally negated Maguire's handball.
Ipswich Town manager Gary O'Neil accepted the decision with good grace while expressing dissatisfaction with the regulation. "Sometimes you see a goal and think it shouldn't stand, and that felt like one of them," O'Neil said. Ipswich had also suffered the loss of record signing Emersonn to a knee injury at half-time.
Five minutes later, Greaves tripped Cunha as the forward chased a throughball from Kobbie Mainoo inside the penalty area. Fernandes stepped up to convert the resulting penalty and extend United's advantage.
Fernandes completes hat-trick in five-goal surge
United scored their fourth goal when initial efforts from Mainoo and Mbeumo were blocked, allowing the ball to fall kindly for Fernandes to slot home and complete his hat-trick.
As heavy rain continued to fall over the stadium, Fernandes released Mbeumo with a throughball, allowing the forward to lob Scherpen for United's fifth goal. Ipswich scored a second goal late in the match when Enciso dispossessed Lisandro Martinez and set up Akpom to finish from close range.
New signings paraded and squad returns
Before kick-off, Manchester United paraded new 70 million pound signing Carlos Baleba on the pitch, though the midfielder could be sidelined until mid-October due to an ankle injury.
Fellow summer midfield acquisitions Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos made their home debuts at Old Trafford, while Mainoo was selected ahead of Santos to start in midfield as part of United's 155 million pound midfield rebuild.
