Manchester United opened their UEFA Champions League campaign with a dominant 4-0 victory over Azerbaijani minnows Sabah FK at Old Trafford.
Matheus Cunha, Bruno Fernandes, Benjamin Sesko and Lisandro Martinez all scored as head coach Michael Carrick secured a routine victory ahead of Sunday's Manchester derby. The result ensured United maintained a 100 per cent record among Premier League clubs in the opening round of European fixtures this season, played before an attendance of 73,685.
The fixture marked United's 300th appearance in Europe's premier competition and their first Champions League match at Old Trafford in nearly three years, following a group-stage exit in 2023.
Midfield control and tactical changes
Youri Tielemans, whose 35 million pound transfer from Aston Villa this summer could have paid for the Sabah squad twice over, produced an influential performance in central midfield alongside Kobbie Mainoo. Carrick's side dominated from the outset against opposition from Masazir, a town with a population of 19,000.
Bookmakers had priced United at 1/10 to beat Sabah, a club formed less than a decade ago that reached the league phase after advancing through four qualifying rounds as underdogs.
The timing of the game, coming three days before hosting Manchester City, required Carrick to rotate his squad, particularly as City played their European fixture on Tuesday. Left-back Luke Shaw was rested after suffering cramp in Sunday's draw at Everton, allowing Patrick Dorgu to start. Forward Marcus Rashford remained on the bench after overstretching a hamstring at the weekend.
Dorgu posed a persistent forward threat despite receiving a booking, while Matheus Cunha moved back to the left flank after playing as a false nine in United's opening three matches. Benjamin Sesko was handed his first start of the season.
Three first-half goals set up victory
United created early opportunities through Cunha and Noussair Mazraoui on the right side of the penalty area. Tielemans then picked out Bruno Fernandes, whose pass towards Sesko was intercepted by Rahman Dashdamirov, before Bryan Mbeumo cut in from the right to shoot directly at goalkeeper Stas Pokatilov.
Sabah offered occasional counter-attacking danger through Kaheem Parris and Joy Lance Mickels, with Mickels heading into the side-netting from a Parris cross.
United made the breakthrough in the 27th minute when a Sabah attack broke down near halfway. Mbeumo recovered the loose ball, which moved through Sesko and Fernandes to find Dorgu. The full-back's first-time cross found Cunha, who finished past Pokatilov from close range.
Tielemans created United's second goal in the 42nd minute, starting a move from midfield before continuing his run into the box. After receiving a pass from Cunha, Tielemans turned smartly to setup Fernandes for a clinical first-time finish.
Three minutes later, Fernandes advanced from the halfway line and found Mbeumo, who slid a pass into the path of Sesko. The Slovenian forward rounded Pokatilov to score his second goal in four days and give United a 3-0 lead at the break.
Speaking after the match, Sesko said: "Of course, I'm happy with my goal. I think the confidence boost is definitely big. Now it's important to recover well and focus on the derby."
Second-half additions and final score
Carrick withdrew Tielemans at half-time to protect the Belgian midfielder ahead of Sunday's derby, introducing Mason Mount. Kobbie Mainoo and Sesko were later replaced by Santos and Joshua Zirkzee in the 64th minute.
United scored their fourth goal in the 68th minute when Pokatilov fumbled a close-range effort from substitute Zirkzee, allowing Lisandro Martinez to pounce and tap into the net.
Carrick made further changes late on, replacing Dorgu with Harry Amass and Mbeumo with Shea Lacey in the 72nd minute. Sabah head coach Valdas Dambrauskas also turned to his bench, introducing Orphe Mbina for Nwachukwu at half-time before bringing on Nariq Isaev for Parris, Khaibulaev for Rakhmonaliev, Du Queiroz for Simic, and Almeida for Akim Zedadka.
Sabah continued to press for a late goal, with Mickels flashing a shot wide before substitute Mbina headed against the crossbar in second-half injury time.
Sabah background and post-match reactions
Before kick-off, the visiting players spent over an hour on the Old Trafford pitch taking pictures and filming to mark the occasion. Only one player in Sabah's 16-man matchday squad had previously played at Champions League level.
Sabah head coach Valdas Dambrauskas previously won 2,500 pounds on Lithuania's version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and used the funds for his coaching education, which included a stint with United's Soccer Schools.
Reflecting on the match, Dambrauskas said: "I think we learned a lot. We will all go home thinking we could have done a little bit better, especially with the result. This is massive experience for us; 16 players went on the pitch and only one of them played at this level before."
Following Sunday's Manchester derby, United face an away trip to Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano Stadium next month. The Spanish venue is scheduled to host the Champions League final in June.
