Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe and winger Vinicius Jr deliberately concealed a message of solidarity with the Spanish enclave of Ceuta on their pre-game t-shirts ahead of their 3-2 victory over Elche on Tuesday night.
The pair were joined by defender Ibrahima Konate in rolling up their garments to hide the slogan in front of watching spectators. The trio were the only members of the squad who demonstrated opposition to the initiative during pre-match proceedings.
The t-shirts displayed the slogan "We are all Caballas" as part of an official initiative designed to show support for the residents of Ceuta. League organizers requested that clubs across Spain promote the message during the latest round of fixtures following a major migration crisis in the territory.
Prior to kickoff, the entire Real Madrid squad was given the green and white t-shirts to wear for the initiative. While their teammates posed for customary photos and lined up as normal, footage showed Vinicius Jr with his shirt rolled up to cover the printed message.
Mbappe was seen grimacing when putting his shirt on before noticing what Vinicius Jr had done and repeating the move. Konate also rolled up his shirt to hide the slogan. None of the three players have spoken publicly to explain their views, but their deliberate actions effectively demonstrated their opposition to the stance of the club and league.
The protest at Real Madrid stood in contrast to the rest of the league. Across the nine other LaLiga fixtures played over the weekend, no other players chose to demonstrate their protest against the Ceuta solidarity message.
Supporter backlash and online criticism
The actions of Mbappe, Vinicius Jr and Konate angered plenty of supporters following the match. Disappointed fans took to social media to voice their frustration at the players for undermining the message of solidarity.
One supporter wrote: "I hope they boo them until the day they leave Real Madrid, utter disgust." Another fan urged club president Florentino Perez to take disciplinary action, posting: "I hope Florentino fines them with 3 months' suspension without a job or pay. That way, the nonsense would end quickly. They're way too full of themselves."
A third supporter expressed outrage, writing: "Shame that @realmadrid allows this contempt toward our compatriots from Ceuta by these millionaires who live in luxurious gated communities with private security."
Real Madrid is one of the most successful football clubs in world sport, operating under president Florentino Perez. The squad is currently managed by Jose Mourinho following his appointment to lead the Spanish giants in LaLiga.
Border crisis in the North African enclave
The initiative that prompted the protest follows a sensitive border crisis in Ceuta, a Spanish territory located on the North African coast bordering Morocco. A state of emergency was declared earlier in the summer when 80,000 migrants, mostly young Moroccan men, arrived over two days on July 30 and July 31.
At least 57 people died attempting to make the journey. Morocco has disputed Spanish sovereignty of the territory since gaining independence in 1956, keeping the political status of Ceuta a sensitive national issue since July.
According to the president of Ceuta, 13,000 of those migrants remain in the enclave today. The influx has created significant political and logistical challenges in the city, which has a permanent population of around 84,000 residents.
Ceuta forms an autonomous Spanish city on the Mediterranean coast of North Africa, representing one of two land borders between the European Union and Africa alongside the neighboring enclave of Melilla.
Government response and regional impact
Addressing the situation this week, Spanish prime minister Pedro Sanchez insisted that the crisis was not mishandled, saying: "What happened is that we couldn't cope with the influx."
Sanchez stated that authorities took in the arriving migrants before returning the majority to Morocco, noting that nine in ten had already gone back. He explained that temporary accommodation for 6,000 people would be available by the end of the week, with capacity eventually rising to 10,000 as the government aims to have the situation under control by the end of the year.
The controversy around the solidarity campaign also affected Moroccan international Ez Abde, who plays for Seville-based club Real Betis. Abde wore the t-shirt prior to his side's match against Villarreal, but subsequently received a barrage of abuse online from fans in Morocco.
Real Betis is based in Seville, the regional capital of Andalusia in southern Spain, and competes alongside Real Madrid and Villarreal in LaLiga. Real Madrid have not announced any official comments regarding the pre-game actions of their players following the win over Elche.
