Diaz Ayuso posted her thanks on X, saying Messi had donated 80,000 euros for the reconstruction of the Sierra Oeste region of Madrid. She said she wanted to thank him and tell him that the people of Madrid were looking forward to welcoming him soon and giving him the applause he deserved.
Scale of the wildfires
The donation is intended to help authorities repair some of the damage caused by the fires west of Madrid. According to the latest information cited in the report, the blaze, which was only just beginning to be brought under control, had burned close to 27,000 hectares across 17 different municipalities. Natural areas, farms and several homes were affected by the disaster.
Messi's ties to Spain
Messi is widely associated with Catalonia because of his years at Barcelona, from 2000 to 2021, which has fed a long-standing rivalry with Madrid.
