William Jewell College running back MicahJo Barnett has died after suffering a medical emergency on the sideline during his team's season-opening college football game on Saturday.
The 20-year-old player collapsed during the first quarter of the Cardinals' game against Fort Lewis College in Liberty, Missouri. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital approximately two hours later.
William Jewell College is a private liberal arts institution in Liberty, a suburb located in Clay County northeast of Kansas City, Missouri. The university's athletics teams compete in NCAA Division II, an intermediate level of college sports competition in the United States.
Medical emergency on the sideline
Paramedics from the Liberty Fire Department responded to the emergency at around 12:20 p.m. on Saturday and rushed Barnett to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Barnett had scored a touchdown earlier in the first quarter to give the Cardinals a 7-0 lead over Fort Lewis. Video footage shared on social media showed the running back scoring his final touchdown and celebrating in the end zone with teammates before the tragedy occurred.
Tragedy struck with 4:32 remaining in the first quarter while the score remained 7-0. According to Fox News KC, Barnett suffered seizure-like symptoms on the sideline. The game was called off as William Jewell players wept and consoled one another on the field before his death was officially confirmed.
University tribute and community support
William Jewell College announced Barnett's passing in an official statement: "William Jewell College and the Liberty, Missouri community mourn the passing of Micah Jo Barnett, a junior business administration and member of Jewell Cardinal football program and former Liberty North Eagle."
The statement continued: "Our thoughts and prayers are with Micah Jo's family, our students, the Cardinal Football family, and the rest of our community during this time of loss. Students and staff are encouraged to connect with Counseling Services and/or the office of the Chaplain who are ready to provide support to those who need it."
The university announced that a vigil would take place at 8 p.m. on the campus quad in honor of Barnett and his family, with funeral details to be shared once available. Alongside a black-and-white graphic of Barnett, the school added the message: "Forever a Cardinal."
William Jewell President Dr. Dave Van Horn thanked first responders and medical personnel for their assistance during the crisis. "We appreciate the response that we received from the Sheriff's Office, the Police department, the EMS Department, our school physician for the team," Van Horn said. "Everybody responded so quickly, so well. We just want to thank them along with the Liberty hospital system for being there with us."
Van Horn added: "Our partners have been reaching out to us, and have given us great support during this time. Our hearts are heavy, and we just appreciate all the support that we have received from the greater community. Thank you so much."
Condolences from Fort Lewis College
Opponents Fort Lewis College, a public liberal arts institution located in Durango, Colorado, initially posted on Facebook when play was halted: "Today's football game at William Jewell is currently suspended following a medical emergency on the William Jewell sideline. We will provide updates as they become available."
Fort Lewis Director of Athletics Shawn Jakubowski later issued a statement offering condolences to the William Jewell community. "Fort Lewis College Athletics extends its deepest condolences to the William Jewell College community following the tragic passing of a Cardinals football student-athlete, MicahJo Barnett," Jakubowski said.
Jakubowski added: "Our hearts are with his family, friends, teammates, coaches, and everyone at William Jewell during this incredibly difficult time. Fort Lewis College counseling staff is reaching out to our football team to ensure our players and staff have the support they need."
Standout high school and college career
Barnett was a 5-foot-8 junior majoring in business administration. Born in Shawnee Mission, Kansas, he was the son of Michelle Barnett and Felix Lora and had six siblings.
Before attending college, Barnett played high school football at Liberty North High School. As a senior, he led Liberty North to a state championship while earning All-Conference and All-State honors after compiling 1,450 all-purpose yards and 20 touchdowns.
He joined William Jewell as a freshman, appearing in eight games during his rookie season. As a sophomore, he started five games and became the Cardinals' leading rusher with a team-best 366 rushing yards before a season-ending injury. He was also named to the 2025-26 Academic All-GLVC team for his performance in the classroom as a business administration student in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Tributes from coaches and family
Terrance Dennis, who served as Barnett's running backs coach at William Jewell before leaving for Cornell State this season, shared a statement on social media after watching the game livestream.
"When I find the words, I'll use them," Dennis wrote. "This has absolutely shattered me. I watched and cheered for your last play on the livestream today, doing what you LOVE, and fought so hard to come back to. The pleasure is forever mine, Uno."
Dennis added: "To his family, to @JewellFootball, the city of Liberty.... I love you all. May God bring you the utmost peace and comfort."
When Barnett originally committed to William Jewell in February 2024, he shared his gratitude in a message on social media. "First I want to thank God for giving me the opportunity to play the sport I love at the next level," Barnett wrote. "From family to coaches and friends thank you for being in my corner when times weren't easy and having faith in me."
In his commitment message, Barnett also addressed his former and future teammates. "To my former teammates thank you guys for not only letting me lead you but for holding me to a standard that I now hold myself to," he wrote. "Thank you to my trainers Mr.Hanson and Mr. Snow for what you guys did for me during this long journey. To William Jewell thank you for giving me a chance to be apart of something that's going to be special. Lastly to my future teammates, let's make this place special."
His mother, Michelle Barnett, had previously shared a throwback photograph of him online on his 19th birthday in September 2024.
