Motherwell thrashed HB 3-0 away on Thursday to seal progression in the Europa Conference League, setting up a clash with HJK Helsinki next week.
The win came against a side unbeaten in its last eight home European ties. Motherwell hit three without reply in what was described as a near-perfect away display.
It marks an early highlight for new manager Alfred Johansson, who replaced Jens Berthel Askou this summer.
Johansson's task has been complicated by the departure of much of last season's squad. Goalkeeper Calum Ward has moved to Queens Park Rangers, while Stephen Welsh has joined Swansea after impressing on loan from Celtic, where he will link up again with New Zealand World Cup player Elijah Just.
Elliot Watt has moved to Samsunspor and Callum Slattery to Sheffield Wednesday. Squad players Liam Gordon and Sam Nicholson have also left the club.
Interest in forward Tawanda Maswanhise has cooled somewhat since the second half of last season, though he is expected to leave North Lanarkshire before the transfer window closes. Left-back Emmanuel Longelo may also depart.
Motherwell does not stand in the way of players seeking a move to a higher level, but the club is not under financial pressure to accept low offers, and has demanded strong prices for its players this summer.
New signings and recruitment plans
Speaking ahead of Sunday's Premiership opener against Hibernian, Johansson said the players Motherwell wants to bring in have to be along the same lines as the club's recruitment over the last couple of years, players who fit the style of play and the way the club wants to behave and treat people. He said they need to be intense in how they play, able to sprint for the team and work hard for the team.
Among the new arrivals, winger Willy Vogt scored 11 times last season for AC Bellinzola, a side that finished bottom of Switzerland's second tier.
Defender Martin Moorman, an Austrian, has stepped into the role left by Welsh at the heart of defence. He scored from 25 yards in the first leg against HB.
Left-back Dylan Williams, formerly of Burton Albion, has been described by Johansson as an attack-minded and exciting defender. Williams scored from the edge of the HB box in the midweek win to open his account for the club.
Midfielder Alex Lowry is seen as a potential source of creative spark if he can find consistency to match his talent.
Motherwell still needs at least one striker and another attacking midfielder. Askou won just one of his first eight league games in charge last season before his side's form improved.
