The total allowed the basketball organization to overtake Major League Baseball, which generated roughly $11 billion last year. The National Football League remains the most lucrative sports league on the planet, heading toward a record annual revenue of $23 billion from broadcast contracts, ticket sales, and sponsorships.
Data tracked over recent decades by Sports Value showed that National Basketball Association president Adam Silver has skillfully built the league by leveraging global star players and developing new international markets. The competition is now widely viewed as the most competitive basketball league in the world.
North American League Revenues
A new 11-year broadcast rights deal worth $76 billion forms the main driver behind the financial milestone, bringing in $7 billion annually. The league posted a 14 percent revenue increase from the previous year, rising from approximately $12.5 billion to $14.3 billion.
Across the other major North American sports leagues, Major League Baseball revenue stagnated at around $11 billion, with similar expectations for the current year. Meanwhile, the National Hockey League saw revenue surpass $7 billion, and Major League Soccer reached $2.3 billion following heavy investment in soccer across the United States.
Salary Cap and Player Contracts
Financial expansion is expected to impact player compensation under the salary cap rule used to maintain competitive balance between franchises. The current salary cap sits at roughly $150 million per season and is projected to reach $226 million by 2030, which could enable the creation of more super teams.
Maximum contracts for superstar franchise players currently cap out at $62.6 million per year, matching the salary received by Stephen Curry with the Golden State Warriors. Projections indicate that maximum annual contracts will exceed $80 million by the end of the decade as league revenues continue to rise.
