Philadelphia 76ers head coach Nick Nurse surprised Brazilian football fans on Tuesday when he attended Náutico's Série B match against Ceará at the Aflitos stadium in Recife.
Nurse was spotted in the stands wearing a Náutico shirt alongside his wife, Roberta Nurse. The unexpected appearance of the NBA head coach at the Brazilian Championship second division fixture quickly became a talking point among supporters at the venue.
His visit to Brazil is part of a professional itinerary to conduct basketball coaching clinics across the country. Nurse began his tour in São Paulo before traveling to Recife, the capital of the state of Pernambuco, where he visited a local school earlier on Tuesday ahead of the evening match.
Family connection to Recife
While his presence at a Brazilian football match astonished local supporters, Nurse has established family connections to northeastern Brazil. His wife, Roberta, is a native of Pernambuco and a passionate supporter of Náutico, one of the state's most historic clubs, traditionally known by the nickname Timbu.
This was not Nurse's first trip to the region. He previously spent time visiting Recife with his family in 2022.
NBA title and playoff run with Philadelphia
Nurse is one of the most successful head coaches in contemporary North American basketball. He gained international recognition during his tenure with the Toronto Raptors, leading the Canadian franchise to its first NBA championship in 2019 before being named the NBA Coach of the Year in 2020.
He took charge of the Philadelphia 76ers in 2023. The Philadelphia team has since added NBA superstar LeBron James to its roster.
In the most recent NBA season, Nurse guided Philadelphia to a seventh place finish in the Eastern Conference standings. The 76ers went on to cause a major playoff surprise in the opening round by eliminating the defending champion Boston Celtics.
Philadelphia was ultimately eliminated in the following round by the New York Knicks, who progressed through the postseason to win the NBA championship title.
