Olympique de Marseille head coach Bruno Genesio faces early summer turmoil following a 2-1 friendly defeat against Atlético de Madrid on Friday. The loss at the Stade Vélodrome highlighted mounting internal tensions and squad difficulties ahead of the upcoming Ligue 1 season.
Ten years after beginning his professional head coaching career at his boyhood club Olympique Lyonnais, Bruno Genesio is managing Marseille during a chaotic transition. Genesio, who also previously managed Stade Rennais and Losc Lille, must navigate a summer defined by severe economic austerity following the end of the Pablo Longoria era.
Marseille operate under strict wage bill and transfer fee restrictions enforced by the Direction Nationale du Contrôle de Gestion, the financial watchdog for French football. Five key players have departed the club this summer, including Mason Greenwood, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Facundo Medina, Gerónimo Rulli, and Hamari Traoré, while Marseille have made zero new signings.
Internal strain became public during Friday's friendly when midfielder Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg was stripped of the team captaincy. The captain's armband was instead handed to Timothy Weah for the match against Spanish side Atlético de Madrid.
Captaincy Dispute Over Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg
Speaking after the match, Bruno Genesio publicly revealed that removing the captaincy from Höjbjerg was not his decision. Genesio stated that the directive was handed down directly by club management, led by owner Frank McCourt and president Stéphane Richard.
Genesio explained that the decision was dictated to him by club leadership. He stated that to be completely frank, it was not a choice he agreed with, but as a club employee he had to follow management instructions.
Club management imposed the decision after Höjbjerg rejected a transfer to English club Newcastle United on Monday. Newcastle had submitted an offer of 10 million euros, including bonus payments, for the Danish international midfielder. Owner Frank McCourt wanted to clear Höjbjerg's high salary to generate funds for incoming summer transfers.
Despite management stripping Höjbjerg of the armband, Genesio maintained trust in the midfielder. The manager kept Höjbjerg in the starting lineup in central midfield against Atlético de Madrid.
Fan Reaction to Leonardo Balerdi
Defender Leonardo Balerdi experienced intense jeering from supporters inside the Stade Vélodrome on Friday. The former Marseille captain has struggled with fan hostility over recent months, six years after joining the French club.
Balerdi delivered a difficult performance against Atlético de Madrid, committing multiple errors and winning none of his five contested duels. In the 39th minute, Balerdi lost a duel to Ademola Lookman, allowing Rodrigo Mendoza to score an equalizing goal for Atlético to make the score 1-1.
The Argentine defender was involved in Atlético's winning goal in the 78th minute. Arnau Ortiz beat Balerdi along the attack before Carlos Martin finished the play to give Diego Simeone's team a 2-1 lead.
Whistles greeted Balerdi whenever he touched the ball during the second half. After suffering muscle cramps, Balerdi was substituted in the 82nd minute for attacker Neal Maupay, who remains at the club. Balerdi skipped the players' post-match lap of honor because of the severe crowd reaction, making a potential departure before the transfer deadline a key target for Marseille.
Bruno Genesio defended his defender in post-match comments. Genesio stated that Balerdi was performing well in the match until Atlético scored their first goal.
Genesio noted that enduring frequent whistles on every ball touch is difficult for any player. He said it was always regrettable to see one of his players thrown to the crowd in that manner.
The manager added that he would always stand behind his players and would continue to support Balerdi. Genesio described that protective approach as his personal way of managing.
Collapse of Nayef Aguerd Transfer
Marseille suffered another setback on Friday when a deal to sell defender Nayef Aguerd to Spanish club Real Sociedad collapsed unexpectedly. The failed negotiation adds further complication to Marseille's transfer window under financial monitoring by the DNCG.
Aguerd, a semifinalist with Morocco at the 2022 World Cup, had traveled to San Sebastian on Wednesday for a medical examination. The proposed transfer involved a 2 million euro paid loan with a non-mandatory purchase option of 17 million euros.
The last-minute breakdown of the deal creates uncertainty regarding Aguerd's physical condition. Without the transfer fee and salary relief, Marseille face tighter limitations in building their roster.
Preparation for Ligue 1 Opener
Marseille have one week remaining before opening their Ligue 1 season against Strasbourg. The club must resolve squad tensions and transfer uncertainties before competitive matches begin.
Despite the chaotic summer environment surrounding Marseille, Bruno Genesio expressed optimism about squad morale. Genesio stated after Friday's match that he felt a very positive energy within the group for now.
