Sporting CP manager Paulo Fonseca announced on Friday that organising his side to defend properly is his immediate priority before introducing a complex positional attack.

Speaking at the club training base in Alcochete ahead of Saturday league fixture against Moreirense, the Portuguese coach insisted that challenging for silverware remains impossible unless his squad improves their defensive organisation.
Sporting Clube de Portugal, who finished as national runners-up last season, have endured an inconsistent defensive campaign across all competitions despite recording back-to-back clean sheets in recent days.
Sporting defensive record and cup statistics
The Lisbon club kept consecutive clean sheets during their last two outings, beating Casa Pia 2-0 in domestic league play under predecessor Rui Borges and defeating Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 in the UEFA Champions League under interim manager Tiago Fernandes.
Despite those shutouts, Sporting have already conceded 16 goals in 15 competitive fixtures this season, representing an average concession rate of more than one goal per match.
That total includes 11 goals conceded in 10 Primeira Liga matches and four goals shipped across four Champions League encounters, alongside a single goal conceded during their solitary Taca da Liga quarter-final tie.
Fonseca arrived at the club following a spell in France with Lyon, taking charge of a side seeking stability after the departure of Borges and the brief caretaker stint of Fernandes.
Tactical philosophy and possession defending
Fonseca emphasised that his defensive focus should not be seen as criticism of Rui Borges, his predecessor at Estadio Jose Alvalade.
The new Alvalade boss stressed on multiple occasions that he does not view the Sporting backline as having defended poorly, but explained that he wants to improve the collective process to match his tactical vision.
Rebuffing suggestions that he had pointed out squad frailties, Fonseca maintained that he never spoke of weaknesses, explaining instead that any side aspiring to win titles must defend properly.
When asked whether he favoured a narrow 1-0 victory or a high-scoring 5-4 outcome, the coach said that while winning is paramount, he strongly prefers securing victories without conceding goals.
Fonseca rejected any suggestion that this preference makes him a defensive tactician, arguing instead that dominating possession is the most effective method of keeping opponents away from goal.
In modern football, positional play involves players occupying specific zones across the pitch to maintain passing options, control tempo, and quickly win back the ball when possession is lost.
Positional play and squad integration
On the attacking side of the pitch, Fonseca told reporters that he has instructed his players to develop greater tactical variability across their formations.
He revealed plans to reintroduce a positional attacking system at Sporting, though he acknowledged that the majority of the club recent recruits are not accustomed to that demanding style of play.
Fonseca highlighted that many young players joined the Portuguese runners-up during the summer transfer window without prior experience in such structured systems.
He explained that teaching the squad requires patience and time because a positional attack must be executed with technical perfection and solid structural support to function properly.
The coach noted that young players must gradually learn the discipline of positional football before the system can operate at full fluency.
Primeira Liga standings and Moreirense preview

Sporting enter the match sitting third in the Primeira Liga table with 21 points from 10 games, level on points with Santa Clara.
The Lisbon club trail second-placed rivals Benfica by four points and sit nine points behind league leaders FC Porto in the title race.
Moreirense, managed by Vasco Botelho da Costa, travel south to the capital in ninth position with 14 points on the board.
