Peru Fall 3-0 to Argentina in Copa Salta Volleyball

Peru's women's volleyball team lost 3-0 to Argentina on Monday, closing out its participation in the Copa Salta de Vóley 2026 with a third consecutive defeat to its rivals. Argentina won 25-23, 25-23, 25-21.

The result gave Argentina a clean sweep of the three-match series, with every game finishing 3-0 in its favour. Peru, coached by Antonio Rizola, competed in the tournament as preparation for next month's South American Championship.

Three straight defeats

Peru and Argentina had agreed to play three friendlies at the Microestadio Delmi, a venue with capacity for more than 3,000 spectators. Argentina won the first match on Saturday, August 22, and the second on Sunday, August 23, both by 3-0. Monday's match, which kicked off at 2 p.m. local time, produced the same scoreline.

Before the series, Rizola had challenged his Argentine counterpart, Facundo Morando, saying he hoped Morando would field his strongest lineup for the friendlies.

Preparing for the South American Championship

The matches formed part of Peru's build-up to the Campeonato Sudamericano de Vóley 2026, which will be played in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from September 8 to 13. The champion of that tournament will qualify directly for the Los Angeles 2027 Olympic Games, while the top three finishers will advance to the 2027 Volleyball World Championship, co-hosted by the United States and Canada.

Montes on the team's progress

Outside hitter Kiara Montes said the friendlies against Argentina were helping the squad work on what Rizola has been asking of them. She said the coaching staff had already carried out an analysis and that each player knew how she had been performing, adding that there was still plenty to correct but that the team was working on it.

Montes also addressed suggestions that she might not play for Peru at the South American Championship, saying her commitment to the team ran through to the end of the competition.

How to watch

The match was broadcast live in Peru on Latina TV, on channel 2 and channel 702 in HD, with streaming available through the broadcaster's app and website.
