Portugal secured their first ever point in the Women's Under-20 World Cup after holding Colombia to a 0-0 draw in Lodz, Poland, on Thursday.
The result in the second Group E fixture gives the Portuguese team, known as the quinas, a historic milestone in their debut appearance at the tournament.
The scoreless draw marked a recovery for Portugal following a 2-0 loss against defending champions North Korea in their opening game of the competition. Colombia had entered the match on the back of a 3-1 victory against Costa Rica in their first group fixture.
Group standings and qualification rules
Head coach Marisa Gomes sees her Portuguese team sitting third in Group E with one point from two matches. North Korea lead the group with six points, placing them five points ahead of Portugal, while Colombia occupy second place with four points.
The tournament format for the 12th edition of the Women's Under-20 World Cup allows the top two teams from each of the six groups to qualify automatically for the round of 16. The four best third-placed teams across all groups will also advance to the knockout stage.
The competition is FIFA's premier official tournament for female youth teams under 20 years of age. Hosted across multiple venues in Poland until September 27, the tournament brings together 24 nations competing for international honours.
Final group match in Sosnowiec
Portugal will complete their group stage campaign on Sunday when they face Costa Rica in the city of Sosnowiec. The match will determine whether Gomes and her players can extend their debut World Cup run into the knockout rounds.
Costa Rica enter the final matchday seeking their own first points of the tournament after their opening loss to Colombia. Portugal must secure a positive result in Sosnowiec to remain in contention for a place in the round of 16 as either a group runner-up or one of the top third-placed sides.
