Portuguese international footballers generated 317.4 million euros during the summer transfer window as nine senior caps changed clubs across Europe and Saudi Arabia.
The total outlay was driven by players holding at least one appearance for the Portugal national team, with domestic clubs featuring prominently in selling operations across the continent.
Midfielder Mateus Fernandes accounted for nearly one third of the overall total after completing a 99 million euro transfer from West Ham United to Tottenham Hotspur. Despite missing out on selection for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the midfielder finalized the move between the two London clubs.
Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United both compete in the English Premier League, where player acquisitions from domestic rivals carry significant financial premiums during major mid-year windows.
Top international transfers and Portuguese club sales
Forward Gonçalo Ramos and winger Francisco Trincão joined Fernandes on the podium of the most expensive Portuguese international moves of the summer. Trincão left Sporting CP as part of five major transfer transactions involving Portuguese clubs during the period.
Portuguese teams operated primarily as sellers in four of those five transactions, while making a single purchase. Sporting CP, one of the traditional powerhouse clubs in Portuguese football alongside FC Porto and Benfica, saw multiple squad members depart for foreign leagues.
Pedro Gonçalves completed the list of senior international transfers after departing Sporting CP for Italian Serie A club Fiorentina. Sporting received an initial loan fee of 2.5 million euros, with the agreement allowing Fiorentina to make the transfer permanent for a further 22.5 million euros upon meeting specific performance objectives.
High profile free transfers to Spanish giants
Two other senior Portuguese internationals changed clubs without transfer fees being involved. Full-back João Cancelo terminated his contract with Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal to complete a permanent transfer to Spanish La Liga club Barcelona.
Playmaker Bernardo Silva also moved on a free transfer after reaching the end of his contract with English champions Manchester City. The midfielder joined Real Madrid, where former Porto, Chelsea and Inter Milan manager José Mourinho currently serves as head coach.
Under-21 stars command substantial fees
Movement among younger national team players also produced major transfer fees for selling clubs. In the Portugal under-21 squad, winger Afonso Moreira moved from French Ligue 1 side Lyon to German Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen in a transfer worth 29.5 million euros.
Attacking midfielder Rodrigo Mora transferred from FC Porto to Italian Serie A club AS Roma for 25 million euros. Midfielder Gustavo Sá departed Portuguese top-flight club Famalicão to join English Premier League side Nottingham Forest for 20 million euros.
FIFA reports record global World Cup movement
The transfers of Portuguese players occurred alongside wider movements across international football following the 2026 World Cup. FIFA revealed that 267 players of 47 nationalities who participated in the 2026 World Cup changed clubs during the mid-year transfer window.
The global governing body stated that those World Cup player transfers represented more than 3.3 billion US dollars, or 2.8 billion euros at current exchange rates, in combined transfer fees.
