Paris Saint-Germain retained the UEFA Super Cup after securing a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa at the Salzburg Stadium in Austria.
Desire Doue scored the winning goal in the second half for Luis Enrique's Champions League winners, after Villa teenager Brian Madjo had cancelled out Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's opener.
Aston Villa, competing as Europa League champions under former PSG manager Unai Emery, pushed the French side throughout the match despite fielding a heavily changed line-up featuring two teenage starters.
Teenagers shine on European stage
Emery raised eyebrows by naming 17-year-old striker Brian Madjo and 19-year-old midfielder George Hemmings in Villa's starting line-up for the fixture in Salzburg.
Both teenagers delivered standout performances against the back-to-back Champions League winners. Madjo made history on his senior debut by becoming the youngest goalscorer in UEFA Super Cup history, showing impressive movement, running, and build-up play in attack while remaining a constant goal threat.
Hemmings played the entire 90 minutes in midfield, dictating play in central areas with composure and authority that belied his 19 years, prompting praise for his ability to control tempo at the highest level.
Buendia and Young offer post-match reflection
Aston Villa midfielder Emi Buendia gave his assessment of the defeat when speaking to TNT Sports after the match.
"Obviously, to lose is not a good feeling, but I think we can feel very proud of the game we did. We compete very well, we had chances to get the result. But they get the chances, they score, and they win the game," Buendia said.
"We were there; we were competing very well. We were pushing at the end of teh first half; Brian scored a very good goal, and we went into half-time believing in ourselves. In the second half, we showed our character, but they took the advantage, and they scored the goal," he added.
Buendia also spoke about supporting debutant Madjo on the night.
"I tried to help him; he's young. But he's got very good development, and with his characteristics I can help him with the opportunity to score goals," Buendia said.
On the tactical and personnel changes within the squad, Buendia emphasized continuity under Emery.
"Football is like this; there are changes. But the structure and the philosophy the manager and the club want to keep is clear," Buendia said.
Former Aston Villa winger Ashley Young provided analysis on BBC Radio 5 Live, pointing to PSG's big-game experience as the deciding factor.
"PSG went about it in the right way, they had some tired players towards the end but to see them go about it the way they did was brilliant. They've got players that have been there and won big competitions, they've got that know-how," Young said.
VAR confirms Doue winner after opening exchange
PSG took the lead in the 20th minute when Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored to put the Parisians 1-0 ahead.
Villa responded at the end of the first half when Madjo scored in the 45th minute to draw Villa level at 1-1 entering half-time.
The match winner arrived in the 61st minute through Doue, who made a superbly timed run behind the Villa defense and finished cleanly.
Referee Omar Artan initially awarded the goal before Video Assistant Referee (VAR) officials reviewed the play. Following a check lasting several seconds, VAR confirmed Doue had timed his run correctly, allowing the goal to stand and making the score 2-1 to PSG.
Doue reacts as Villa miss late chance
Goalscorer Doue reflected on the triumph during a post-match interview with TNT Sports.
"This is amazing. To win this trophy is amazing. This is really difficult. To get here, you have to win the Champions League, and we did that again. Now we win the second Super Cup. We want more. We want to win everything this season again. We can always improve," Doue said.
Villa came close to forcing an equalizer in the 95th minute when a late ball was delivered into the PSG penalty area. Buendia leaped to connect with a header, but could not direct his effort on target as Villa wasted their final opening.
Marquinhos lifts trophy amid measured celebrations
At full-time, PSG skipper Marquinhos collected the UEFA Super Cup trophy, dancing over to his teammates before thrusting the silverware into the air. Confetti rained down as Queen's We Are The Champions played across the stadium sound system.
The celebrations remained modest compared to PSG's post-match festivities in Budapest back in May. Players shared hugs and smiles before taking a group photo in front of their traveling supporters, treating the win as the starting point for the season ahead.
Villa build foundation for season ahead
Despite being left disappointed at full-time, Villa produced a performance that pushed the Champions League holders throughout. Captain John McGinn led by example in midfield, while Villa's fringe players and younger squad members delivered encouraging displays.
The annual UEFA Super Cup brings together the winners of UEFA's two top club competitions, the Champions League and Europa League. For PSG, victory extended their trophy record under Luis Enrique despite minimal pre-season preparation following player commitments at the World Cup.
