Portuguese attacking midfielder Quevin Castro died on Saturday, August 22, at the age of 25 after collapsing during a friendly match against Estrela da Amadora, a top-flight Portuguese club. Castro had joined Real Sport Clube this summer.
According to the Portuguese sports newspaper A Bola, Castro collapsed on the pitch at the Estadio dos Seixas in Malveira, near Lisbon, roughly ten minutes into the game. Medical teams from both clubs rushed to help him, and a defibrillator carried by Estrela da Amadora's medical staff was used in the attempt to revive him.
Resuscitation efforts failed to save him. Castro was taken to hospital by emergency responders and died there on Saturday morning. The precise cause of his collapse has not been disclosed.
Club pays tribute
Real Sport Clube, based in Massama, announced the news on social media, saying it felt "profound sadness" and "immense pain" over the tragedy. The club said Castro was far more than just a player, calling him a member of its family who left a mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him, both on the pitch and off it. It offered condolences to his loved ones.
A career between England and Portugal
Castro was born in Lisbon and completed part of his football education in England. West Bromwich Albion, the English club that signed him in 2021, said in a statement that it was deeply saddened to learn of his premature death.
West Bromwich Albion recalled that Castro made his first-team debut in the League Cup against Arsenal before going on to play his first league match in February 2022. From 2023 onward he moved between several clubs before eventually returning to his native Portugal.
Tribute planned against Burnley
West Bromwich Albion said it would honour its former player on Sunday during its match against Burnley. A minute of applause is planned for the 25th minute, and players will wear black armbands.
