Racing de Santander drew 2-2 against Villarreal CF at El Sardinero on Sunday in their first LaLiga EA Sports match after a 14-year absence from Spain's top division.
The newly promoted hosts surged into a two-goal lead through an Andrés Martín penalty and a long-range strike from youth product Sergio Martínez, but Villarreal responded with two quick goals before half-time to earn a point in the opening matchday of the season.
A crowd of 22,413 spectators gathered at the Campos de Sport de El Sardinero for the club's return to the top flight. Before kick-off, players and supporters observed a minute of silence in memory of the victims of the earthquake in Colombia.
Early lead for Santander
Racing manager José Alberto López had warned on the eve of the fixture that his team would not renounce their attacking principles. He noted that the squad showed the same strengths and weaknesses as last season, proving capable of scoring many goals while also conceding them easily.
Santander took the lead in the 21st minute following a penalty award. Andrés Martín, who finished as Racing's top scorer in Segunda División last season, converted from the spot after a Video Assistant Referee review confirmed that the initial foul occurred inside the penalty area.
The home side doubled their advantage in the 34th minute to the delight of the crowd. Homegrown midfielder Sergio Martínez, making his top-flight debut for his club, struck a long-range shot from outside the box directly into the top corner of the net, leaving Villarreal goalkeeper Luiz Junior unable to intervene.

Villarreal fight back before the break
Villarreal, under manager Íñigo Pérez, started the match sluggishly but needed just over a minute to wipe out Santander's lead. Midfielder Pape Gueye initiated the comeback in the 45th minute, launching an angled long-range shot into the net to pull a goal back.
Directly after Racing restarted from the center circle, the hosts surrendered possession. Villarreal forward Nicolas Pépé capitalized immediately in the first minute of stoppage time (45+1), curling a strike into the far post to equalize at 2-2 before the interval.
Second half tactical battle
Villarreal sought a winner in the second half as Pérez drew upon his bench strength. In the 56th minute, the visiting coach made a triple substitution, sending on Gerard Moreno, Buchanan, and Macía for Santi Comesaña, Moleiro, and Ayoze to widen the pitch and refresh his attack.
The adjustments pinned Santander deep into their own half, restricting Racing's counter-attacking outlets. However, López's side defended resolutely through sustained pressure to earn their first point of the season and demonstrate their resilience.
