Rangers lost 2-1 against Jagiellonia Bialystok in north-east Poland after giving up an early lead in the first leg of their Europa League qualifier.
The six-foot four defender Manny Fernandez struggled throughout the match as two defensive errors from the 24-year-old turned a one-goal advantage into a deficit within eight minutes. Fernandez had previously faced scrutiny after sauntering back up the field when Dundee United scored in a Friday draw at Tannadice, costing Derek McInnes's side two points.
In Poland, Fernandez first mishandled a routine low cross with a dismal attempt to readjust his feet, steering the ball into his own net. Shortly after, he slipped while trying to defend another cross from the opposite flank just before the Polish side scored their second goal.
Former Ibrox midfielder Andy Halliday stated at the weekend that certain players at the club did not seem to want to defend. Fernandez had been linked with potential moves to Arsenal and West Ham in April, but his lack of commitment and mindset over 90 minutes caused repeated issues for McInnes.
Fernandez was not the only player to struggle in an error-strewn team display. Thelo Aasgaard regressed from his form on Tayside, giving away a cheap turnover that led directly to Jagiellonia's second goal. In midfield, neither Dan Neil nor Tochi Chukwuani imposed themselves enough to guarantee a starting spot in the return leg.
The main positive for McInnes came from teenager Findlay Curtis, who showed courage after coming off the bench. The second-half introduction of Nico Raskin also lifted the team, though the improved performance offered little comfort to the 1,027 Rangers supporters inside the Chorten Arena.

McInnes made five changes to his starting team following the draw at Tannadice. Daisuke Yokota made his debut on the wing following his transfer from Hannover, while Ross McCrorie replaced the injured Ben Godfrey. Neil and Chukwuani started in midfield, and Youssef Chermiti was selected to lead the attack.
Jagiellonia's line-up included former Celtic defender Yuki Kobayashi. Kobayashi managed only a handful of appearances in two years at Celtic after a weak display in a 3-0 defeat at Ibrox three years ago, but he delivered a strong performance for the Polish side.
McInnes instructed his wide players to exploit space on the flanks against Jagiellonia's narrow formation. Rangers opened the scoring in the fourth minute through a combination between Tuur Rommens and Mohamed Diomande. Rommens passed to Diomande, ran forward to receive a return pass, and delivered a fast cross that forced Guilherme Montoia to slice the ball into his own net.
Chermiti nearly doubled the lead after winning back possession, but Jagiellonia goalkeeper Slawomir Abramowicz saved his strike. Rangers then dropped their intensity and began committing basic errors.
First half turnaround and Polish goals
Jagiellonia equalized after Yokota failed to stop Kajetan Szmyt from cutting back onto his right foot to cross. Fernandez stretched for the ball instead of clearing it, steering his studs onto the target and past horrified goalkeeper Ivor Pandur into the net.
The home side took the lead in the 21st minute following a mistake by Aasgaard. The attacker attempted an unnecessary flick in a promising position, surrendering possession. Nik Prelec ran down the right wing unchecked and delivered a cross into the penalty area.
Fernandez lost his footing as the ball came across, allowing it to reach Jesus Imaz. Pandur saved the initial attempt with an outstretched hand, but Szmyt smashed home the rebound to put Jagiellonia ahead 2-1.
McInnes spoke with his squad during a hydration break immediately following the second goal. Jagiellonia continued to attack, with Rodrigo Conceicao striking the side netting after Fernandez failed to clear another dangerous situation.
Kobayashi made a key tackle to deny Chukwuani before Pandur saved a deflected shot from Prelec. Pandur also stopped a strike from Norbert Wojtuszek to keep the score at 2-1 before half-time.
Second half pressure and late chances
McInnes made a triple substitution at the break, introducing Raskin, Cammy Devlin, and Curtis in place of Neil, Chukwuani, and Yokota. The changes brought an immediate improvement in Rangers' play.
Devlin won back possession on the hour mark to create a chance for Aasgaard, but the Norwegian shot wide. Curtis came close to touching home a cross from Raskin, and a shot from Devlin was tipped over the crossbar. Jagiellonia threatened on a counter-attack when a mistake by Rommens allowed Imaz to send a cross wide of the post.
Curtis created multiple opportunities from the left wing late in the game. He saw his own shot tipped away before Kobayashi deflected a follow-up effort from McCrorie wide. McInnes substituted Aasgaard for Dragojevic in the 76th minute and brought on Lawrence Shankland for McCrorie in the 85th minute. Deep in injury time, Curtis hit the post with a volley.
