Rayan Cherki scored two second-half goals to propel Manchester City to a 4-1 victory against Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Friday.
The French midfielder turned the match in City's favor after persuading manager Enzo Maresca not to substitute him during a difficult half-time interval.
Cherki had struggled in the opening 45 minutes and faced being taken off at the break. He asked Maresca to grant him five minutes in the second half, promising that no substitution would be necessary. Nine minutes after the restart, Cherki produced a stunning solo run through tight spaces before finishing with a delicate toe-poke. He added his second goal shortly after with a powerful strike that took a slight deflection off a defender.
The native of Lyon joined Manchester City a year ago from French club Olympique Lyonnais. Having been left on the bench for City's opening league fixture of the season, Cherki admitted feeling hurt by the decision. He responded the following week by coming off the bench to supply two assists in City's first victory of the campaign, before delivering his decisive double against Crystal Palace.
Half-time conversation and Haaland rivalry
Speaking after the match on the Late Football Club program on CANAL+ Foot, Cherki reflected on his performance in an interview with Stéphane Guy. He explained that he needed to answer questions raised by his manager and show his determination on the pitch. Despite his two-goal performance, Cherki expressed regret at failing to provide more service to teammate Erling Haaland, promising to set up the Norwegian striker in upcoming matches.
Cherki noted with a smile that both he and Haaland currently stand on two goals for the season. He joked that an internal competition was underway between them, while acknowledging that Haaland would comfortably finish as the top scorer. Cherki emphasized that his primary role remains pushing his teammate and creating scoring opportunities for him.
Pundit praise and player freedom
Cherki's individual brilliance drew widespread praise from English football commentators. Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp, speaking as a pundit on Sky Sports, described Cherki's opening goal as a painted masterpiece that arrived at a crucial moment in the contest.
Redknapp labeled Cherki a genius, highlighting his extraordinary balance and technical skill on the ball. He remarked that very few Premier League players possess such ability, comparing Cherki's flair to former Chelsea forward Eden Hazard. Redknapp added that managers must grant Cherki complete freedom on the pitch to maximize his unique and atypical talent.
The defeat marked a tough evening for Crystal Palace manager Pierre Sage, who previously coached Cherki during their shared time at Lyon. Manchester City's victory builds further momentum in their domestic campaign, with Cherki establishing himself as a key figure in Maresca's side.
