Sebastien Pocognoli is on the brink of being named Scotland's new head coach following extensive negotiations with Scottish Football Association executives.
The 39-year-old Belgian trainer has held detailed discussions with SFA chief executive officer Ian Maxwell and chief football officer Craig Mulholland. His official appointment is expected to be confirmed by the governing body in the coming days.
Pocognoli will become the national side's first foreign manager in more than 20 years. The last overseas head coach to lead Scotland was former West Germany World Cup winner Berti Vogts, who left his post in November 2004 after spending less than two years at the helm.
Coaching achievements in Belgium and France
Pocognoli retired from professional football as a player in 2021 before moving directly into coaching. He began his managerial career working with the under-21 team at Belgian side Union St Gilloise.
He subsequently moved to his former club Genk to take charge of their under-18 squad before returning to Union St Gilloise as head coach in 2024. In his debut season, he led the Brussels-based, Tony Bloom-backed outfit to their first domestic league title in 90 years in 2025 and was named Manager of the Year.
His domestic success in Belgium earned him a high-profile job at French Ligue 1 side Monaco in October. However, his tenure in the Principality lasted only eight months, ending when Brazilian coach Filipe Luis was brought in as his replacement with Monaco lying seventh in the standings.
Tactical approach and national team vacancy
As a tactician, Pocognoli is known to favour an aggressive high-pressing style and insists on his teams being strong during transition phases. He has frequently deployed either a 3-4-1-2 or 3-5-2 formation throughout his managerial career.
During a 17-year playing career as a defender, Pocognoli earned 13 senior caps for the Belgian national team. His club career included spells in his homeland, the Netherlands, Germany, and England, where he turned out for West Bromwich Albion and Brighton and Hove Albion.
His impending arrival marks the end of the SFA search for Steve Clarke's successor. The former national coach chose to resign from his position after Scotland failed to progress beyond the group stage at the World Cup in the summer.
Data analytics and upcoming fixtures
The SFA is understood to have employed data analytics in their search for a new manager, with Pocognoli scoring strongly on the statistical performance metrics targeted by the association.
Pocognoli is currently a free agent following his departure from Monaco, leaving him free to start work immediately without requiring compensation negotiations.
His first assignment will be preparing the national team for Scotland's upcoming UEFA Nations League double-header at the end of next month, which features an away fixture against Slovenia followed by a home match against Switzerland.
