Skyliners Frankfurt begin their European basketball season on Tuesday evening with an away match against Italian side Umana Reyer Venice in the EuroCup.
The Hessian team will play a minimum of 14 matches in the continental tournament after securing a three-year wildcard entry from European basketball governing body ULEB.
The wildcard selection follows a difficult domestic season in which Frankfurt finished 15th in the 18-team Basketball Bundesliga, Germany's top-flight basketball league. The Union des Ligues Européennes de Basketball expanded the EuroCup field from 20 to 32 teams for the current season. Organisers granted the long-term wildcard in anticipation of Frankfurt moving into a planned modern sports arena in the Stadtwald district of the city, hoping the venue will enhance the club's commercial and sporting appeal.
Tournament format and group rivals
The EuroCup is the secondary club competition in European basketball behind the EuroLeague. For the expanded stage, the 32 participating clubs are divided into four groups of eight teams. Every team plays home and away matches against all seven group opponents during the primary stage.
The top four teams from each group qualify for the round of 16 knockout stage. Subsequent elimination rounds, including the quarter-finals and semi-finals, will be contested in a best-of-three series format.
Frankfurt face a varied line-up of European clubs in their group. Their opponents include Turkish side Türk Ankara, Romanian club U-BT Cluj-Napoca, Spanish team La Laguna Tenerife, Lithuanian outfit Siauliai Basketball, and the London Lions from Great Britain, alongside Italian clubs Maxima Roma and Umana Reyer Venice.
Match scheduling and ticket prices
EuroCup fixtures are scheduled during midweek slots, primarily on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with two matchdays set for Thursdays. Home matches for the Skyliners take place at the Ballsporthalle in Frankfurt and will start no earlier than 7:30 pm local time to accommodate working supporters.
Away fixtures vary in scheduling, with some starting as early as 5:30 pm local time. The opening fixture against Venice in Italy is scheduled for an 8:30 pm tip-off on Tuesday evening.
A small contingent of traveling supporters will attend the opening match in Venice. Skyliners Frankfurt confirmed to broadcaster hr-sport that roughly 20 away tickets were requested through the club. Standard EuroCup home tickets at the Ballsporthalle start at €12.90, making international matches cheaper for local fans than Bundesliga fixtures. The lowest non-discounted ticket price for the match in Venice is set at €15.60.
Competitive prospects and team reaction
The group presents a challenging draw for the German club. Opening opponent Umana Reyer Venice reached the Italian Cup final last season, Türk Ankara finished fifth in the Turkish Super League, and the London Lions hold a dominant standing in British basketball.
Skyliners captain Till Pape acknowledged that the team faces a formidable challenge in a strong group against established European sides. He stated that Frankfurt intend to maintain a competitive approach and push for victory in every fixture throughout the competition.
