Danish midfielder Sofie Lundgaard has completed a transfer from English club Liverpool to Eintracht Frankfurt, signing a contract through June 2029 with the Frauen-Bundesliga side.
Eintracht Frankfurt announced the deal on Friday. The 24-year-old moves to Germany to play under head coach Niko Arnautis as the club continues to shape its squad for the upcoming season.
Sporting director Babett Peter said Eintracht Frankfurt had been monitoring Lundgaard and her career development for a long time. Peter added that it was the perfect moment to pursue and complete the deal, noting that the club expects to deploy Lundgaard in central midfield as a number six or a number eight.
Lundgaard said that Frankfurt is an incredibly exciting club with high ambitions that align closely with her personal goals. She added that she had heard only good things about the team and noted that having a strong Scandinavian presence in the squad would be an advantage, particularly during her initial adaptation period.
Her arrival expands Eintracht Frankfurt's Scandinavian contingent. Swedish midfielder Hanna Bennison joined the squad just over a month ago, joining fellow Swedes Amanda Ilestedt and Rebecka Blomqvist, as well as Norwegian player Marthine Ostenstad.
Career background and Liverpool stint
Lundgaard made her professional debut for Danish side Aalborg at the age of 16 before making her breakthrough at Fortuna Hjorring. Following Fortuna Hjorring's Danish Women's Cup victory in 2022, she was regarded as one of Scandinavian football's most promising young talents.
Her performances secured a move to Women's Super League club Liverpool during the second half of the 2022-23 season. Over three and a half years on Merseyside, Lundgaard made 42 competitive appearances for Liverpool, including 29 in England's top flight, though she struggled to secure a major career breakthrough.
The midfielder now returns to continental Europe to bolster Frankfurt's central options ahead of the new campaign.
