A high school football game between South Allegheny and Elizabeth Forward in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, was halted on Friday night after a gunshot caused mass panic. Players, coaches, cheerleaders, band members and spectators fled the field to seek safety.
School police officers apprehended a suspect within seconds of the gunshot, and officials immediately declared the game over. South Allegheny Superintendent Dr. David McDonald confirmed that no injuries were reported following the incident at Gladiator Stadium.
The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League matchup was stopped at approximately 10:55 p.m. with 4:44 remaining in the third quarter. Visiting team Elizabeth Forward had just scored a touchdown to take a 42-20 lead over host South Allegheny.
The incident unfolded live on the TribLive High School Sports Network. As players lined up for the kickoff following a brief break after the touchdown, a gunshot was audibly heard in the venue.
Panic on the field and broadcast
Audio from the broadcast captured screams as panic rapidly spread across the stadium. Players and cheerleaders along the South Allegheny sideline nearest the camera began sprinting away, followed by Elizabeth Forward players, coaches, band members and fans rushing for cover.
TribLive announcer Paul Paterra reported the terrifying scene as it occurred. "Now there has been a shooting. There has been a shooting," Paterra said during the live stream. He urged onlookers to get down and instructed a colleague filming the game to get off the roof of the press box.
"Folks, we are ducking for cover. There was a shot, it appears. All we saw is everybody just start sprinting. There was a loud bang," Paterra added, telling viewers the crew would share updates as soon as possible.
Players retreated to the locker room while several spectators took shelter inside the press box. Approximately 10 minutes later, after head coaches met with match officials and the game was formally called off, players were safe to return to midfield to shake hands.
Superintendent statement and police response
South Allegheny Superintendent Dr. David McDonald detailed the police intervention in an official statement released after the game. McDonald noted that the suspect, whose address is neither a South Allegheny nor an Elizabeth Forward address, was apprehended within seconds by South Allegheny School Police officers.
"Both teams were escorted to their respective locker rooms by local police, and all spectators have safely exited the stadium," McDonald stated. He expressed gratitude for the rapid response of school police and local law enforcement partners, emphasizing that student, athlete and community safety remains the highest priority.
Allegheny County is located in southwestern Pennsylvania, where high school football serves as a major community event. The fixture marked the first game of the season in the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League, known locally as the WPIAL.
As the TribLive broadcast concluded, Paterra delivered a final plea for safety. "Ladies and gentleman, stay safe out there, and don't let this stuff happen any more," Paterra said. "This is an athletic endeavor of high school kids. It's a joyful experience. Don't ever put a dampener on it, don't ever let it have to end this way."
