Spain's women's national basketball team has departed for the 2026 World Cup in Germany following a send-off event at Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas Airport.
Sponsoring partner CaixaBank organized the official farewell ceremony in a room set up for the occasion in Terminal 4 of the Madrid airport. Eleven of the 12 players selected for the tournament squad attended the event alongside the coaching staff.
CaixaBank chief executive officer Gonzalo Gortazar and Spanish Basketball Federation president Elisa Aguilar presented the squad with their official tournament jerseys. The kit features the official FIBA patch designated for national teams competing at the 2026 Women's Basketball World Cup in Germany.
Farewell presentation at Madrid Airport
During the presentation, Gortazar wished the team luck and offered the full support of the financial institution. He said the selection represents ambition, talent, teamwork and the ability to inspire an entire country once again.
Gortazar added that CaixaBank felt proud to accompany the team to the World Cup. He expressed his hopes that the squad would enjoy a journey that already serves as an example for many girls and young women.
CaixaBank is one of Spain's leading banking and financial services groups. The entity serves as an official sponsoring partner of the Spanish Basketball Federation, supporting both the women's and men's national teams. It is also the main sponsor of the Spanish Federation of Sports for People with Physical Disabilities, promoting wheelchair basketball across the country.
Official jerseys and federation support
Aguilar thanked the financial institution for its backing and underlined the symbolic value of the gathering. She said the jersey carries special value because it is the garment in which the national team assumes the representation of Spain at the World Cup.
Aguilar also expressed her gratitude to CaixaBank and Gortazar for their years of support dedicated to Spanish women's basketball. The Spanish Basketball Federation, known as the FEB, is the governing body for basketball in Spain, overseeing national team programs and domestic competitions.
The national team is heading to the tournament under the official campaign slogan "Volvemos a soñar", or "We dream again", which the federation launched to engage fans in the team's return. CaixaBank is supporting the cycle with its own slogan, "Volvemos a creer", meaning "We believe again".
Return to the World Cup stage
The tournament in Germany marks Spain's return to the Women's Basketball World Cup after an eight-year absence. The Berlin 2026 championship will be Spain's eighth appearance at the global event.
Spain enters the competition as European runners-up after winning the silver medal at the 2025 EuroBasket tournament in Athens. Across their seven previous World Cup appearances, the Spanish team has claimed three medals: a silver medal in 2014 and bronze medals in 2010 and 2018.
The 2026 tournament will mark the World Cup debut for a new generation of players, with veteran star Alba Torrens remaining as the sole survivor from previous world championship rosters. Torrens is one of Spanish basketball's most decorated international players.
The tournament will also be the first World Cup campaign for head coach Miguel Mendez. The team now travels to Germany to begin its final preparations ahead of the opening games in Berlin.
