Sporting CP moved to the top of the Portuguese Primeira Liga table after securing a convincing 4-0 away victory against Rio Ave on Friday. Colombian striker Luis Suárez scored twice in the first half, while Flávio Gonçalves and Mozambican winger Geny Catamo also found the net in Vila do Conde to seal a dominant performance for the visitors in the opening match of week four.
The win marks Sporting's third consecutive league victory following an opening day draw at Estrela da Amadora, bringing their total to 10 points. They sit one point clear of FC Porto, who visit Académico de Viseu on Saturday. Rio Ave remain 10th in the standings with three points after suffering their third defeat in four league matches.
Early dominance in Vila do Conde
Sporting needed just five minutes to open the scoring at the Estádio dos Arcos. Midfielder Issa Doumbia carved open the hosts with a precise through ball to Flávio Gonçalves, who finished with composure using his right foot. The young winger chose not to celebrate his goal out of respect for Rio Ave, having spent part of his development in the club's youth academy. Rio Ave attempted to respond in the 10th minute when Dario Spikic flicked a header toward Ntoi in the penalty box. Ntoi attempted a shot while off balance, but sent a weak effort wide before appealing unsuccessfully for a foul.
Sporting won a corner in the 13th minute after Ntoi deflected the ball out of play. The set piece was taken short before Maxi Araújo floated a high ball into the penalty area, which Rio Ave goalkeeper Ennio Van Der Gouw gathered cleanly. Sporting doubled their advantage in the 19th minute through a swift counter-attacking move. Flávio Gonçalves won possession near his own penalty area and passed to Doumbia, who drove forward into the attacking half before returning the ball to Flávio. The winger then delivered an outside-of-the-foot trivela cross to the far post, where Geny Catamo arrived to convert with his left foot.
Suárez double puts match beyond reach
Rio Ave threatened to halve the deficit in the 22nd minute when Marios Vrousai saw his effort blocked behind by Sporting defender Iván Fresneda. From the resulting corner, Diogo Bezerra struck a powerful delivery that struck the arm of Doumbia, which was held close to his body. Following a consultation with the video assistant referee, the referee instructed Rio Ave to take another corner. Bezerra swung the second corner into the heart of the box, where Flávio Gonçalves cleared the threat, allowing Spikic to drag the loose ball off target.
Sporting maintained clinical efficiency, scoring their third goal from their third shot on target in the 26th minute. Rodrigo Zalazar set up Geny Catamo for a left-footed strike that struck the post, but Suárez reacted fastest to turn the rebound into the net with his right foot. The visitors came close to a fourth in the 36th minute when Suárez launched a long pass to Geny Catamo, who was denied in a one-on-one situation by Van Der Gouw before Maxi Araújo sent the rebound wide of the target. A minute later, Suárez made it 4-0 with his second goal of the evening. The Colombian combined with Flávio Gonçalves before feeding Maxi Araújo, who laid the ball off for Suárez to finish with his left foot. Suárez almost added a third in the 44th minute, but his shot from the edge of the area hit the Rio Ave defensive wall, leaving Sporting four goals ahead at the interval.
Second-half exchanges and tactical adjustments
Rio Ave searched for a response early in the second half, but Dario Spikic saw a through pass to Jalen Blesa ruled out for offside in the 47th minute. Sporting replied in the 51st minute when Petrasso conceded a corner while defending against Maxi Araújo. Zalazar and Flávio Gonçalves worked the set piece short, but Flávio's eventual cross flew well wide. A Sporting forward was shown a yellow card for a foul moments later. In the 53rd minute, Maxi Araújo crossed from the left wing for Zalazar, whose weak effort missed the target.
Rio Ave midfielder Tamás Nikitscher received a yellow card for a foul in the 60th minute. Sporting made a triple substitution in the 65th minute, bringing on Fotis Ioannidis for Flávio Gonçalves, Luís Guilherme for Geny Catamo, and Silas Andersen for Issa Doumbia. Immediately following the changes, Doumbia tried a right-footed shot from distance after receiving a pass from Maxi Araújo, but missed the target. Rio Ave replaced Diogo Bezerra with Malik Sellouki in the 66th minute, and a minute later, Liavas picked out Temble from a free kick, with the header traveling over the crossbar.
Late pressure and squad rotations
Rio Ave made two more substitutions in the 74th minute, replacing Nikitscher with Antoine Wenck and Spikic with Roland Galčík. Shortly after entering, Sellouki picked out Spikic with a low cross, but the shot went wide as the home coach prepared additional adjustments. Sporting substitute Luís Guilherme forced a save in the 79th minute with a left-footed attempt from the right side of the penalty area that was caught in the middle of the goal. Sporting then substituted Zalazar for Nestory Irankunda in the 81st minute.
Both teams completed further tactical changes in the 86th minute. Sporting withdrew Suárez for Jesse Derry, while Rio Ave introduced Miguel Patrício for Vrousai and Caike for Blesa.
In the 90th minute, Sporting substitute Ioannidis saw his free-kick strike hit the Rio Ave wall.
Sporting pushed for a fifth goal during injury time. In the 91st minute, Maxi Araújo struck a right-footed shot from the middle of the penalty area following a cross from Irankunda, but Van Der Gouw saved the effort in the center of the goal. One minute later, Derry fired a late effort straight at the Rio Ave goalkeeper before the referee blew the final whistle.
