Golden State Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy reiterated on Tuesday that the team and guard Stephen Curry plan to stay together until Curry retires. Both sides have previously expressed a desire for Curry to finish his basketball career in San Francisco, and Dunleavy said little has changed to alter those plans.
Curry is entering the final season of a contract that will pay him 62.5 million dollars, or about 321 million Brazilian reais. While the ending contract provides flexibility if either side seeks a change, Dunleavy told reporters that neither the team nor Curry is considering a move.
Contract extension options
Golden State and Curry will become eligible to negotiate a contract extension after August 29. On that date, the 38-year-old guard can sign a new deal for up to two years worth an additional 136.7 million dollars. Curry, who turned 38 on March 14, is a two-time NBA Most Valuable Player and an 11-time All-NBA selection.
The veteran guard has played all 17 of his NBA seasons with Golden State and has stated he would like to play for two more years. Physical wear may present a challenge, however. After appearing in at least 70 games in consecutive years, Curry struggled with injuries during the 2025-26 season and made only 41 starts. Golden State finished that campaign with a 37-45 record.
Trade discussions and career goals
Dunleavy said that Curry has earned the right to leave on his own terms if he chooses. He added that if Curry ever requested a trade, team controlling owner Joe Lacob and Dunleavy would discuss the matter, though they would not favor it. Dunleavy stressed that staying together has always been the shared goal.
Dunleavy emphasized two constants regarding Curry, stating that the guard remains deeply committed to winning and determined to retire as a member of the Warriors. He added that he expects those priorities to remain unchanged throughout the upcoming season.
