Dominik Szoboszlai has denied falling out with Liverpool team-mate Curtis Jones after the pair appeared to clash following a pre-season match against Wrexham.
The incident happened at Yankee Stadium in New York after Liverpool's 1-0 win, and also involved Kostas Tsimikas. The confrontation is believed to have been sparked by Szoboszlai not passing the captain's armband to Jones, who was seen throwing a tantrum. Tsimikas, who was given the captaincy instead, then threw the armband on the floor.
Szoboszlai played down the dispute, saying it was never a debate between the three of them and that they had just discussed something on the pitch. He said the media had made it very big, and that next time they would manage the discussion in the changing room. He added that nobody was angry at anyone, that it was all cleared, and that everybody was cool.
Mac Allister comment clarified
Szoboszlai also clarified a comment about Alexis Mac Allister returning to the squad after the post-World Cup break. He had said Mac Allister would return "if" he comes back, prompting fans to speculate the player was leaving. Szoboszlai said that was his English and that he meant "when," not "if," confirming Mac Allister is coming back and will be part of the team as far as he knows.
Vice-captaincy hopes
Szoboszlai said he cannot wait for the new season to start and feels Liverpool are ready to go again after a campaign that did not end where they wanted. He named Alisson and Joe Gomez as vice-captaincy options, noting Alisson is not on tour and Gomez is injured. He said he was proud to have the captaincy on the tour.
Szoboszlai said the vice-captaincy decision is not fixed and not his choice, but that anyone offered it at Liverpool would take it, calling it a proud moment. He said whoever gets it, the squad will respect and follow them.
