LaLiga president Javier Tebas has called for Gianni Infantino to step down as FIFA president, arguing that the withdrawal of a plan to privatise FIFA competitions does not resolve what he described as a fundamental governance problem.
Tebas posted his remarks on X, saying it would be a serious mistake for confederations, associations, leagues and players to treat the withdrawal of the FIFA Forward Enterprise project as the end of the matter. He said the issue ran much deeper.
The LaLiga chief listed a series of grievances to support his position: the withdrawal of a red card following political intervention, a US Congress investigation that has requested Infantino’s appearance over what Tebas called very serious conduct, the dropping of charges in historic FIFA corruption cases, the high ticket prices at the World Cup, and unilateral decisions on the international calendar and new competitions taken without genuine dialogue with the affected parties.
Tebas argued that the real problem was not any single proposal but a governance model that he said concentrated power, reduced checks and balances, and marginalised those directly affected by its decisions.
He said world football needed new leadership that would modernise governance, restore institutional credibility, and build future decisions in agreement with relevant stakeholders rather than imposing them unilaterally.
Withdrawing a proposal, he concluded, did not erase everything that had happened. It was, he said, only the tip of the iceberg.
