The Longhorns trailed the Buckeyes 23-3 heading into the fourth quarter before scoring three unanswered touchdowns to steal the win. Texas rose three spots to reach No. 1 after entering the week ranked fourth.
Georgia held at No. 2 after a blowout win over Western Kentucky, and Notre Dame stayed at No. 3 following a comfortable victory over Rice. Indiana and Miami completed the top five at No. 4 and No. 5.
Ohio State's fall
Ohio State dropped five spots, from No. 1 to No. 6, after its loss to Texas. The Associated Press poll is voted on each week by a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters and is one of the most closely watched rankings in the sport, shaping perceptions of national championship contenders ahead of the College Football Playoff.
Rest of the top ten
LSU held at No. 7 after a 45-14 win over Louisiana Tech, followed by Mississippi at No. 8 after a 41-9 win over Charlotte. Texas A&M sat at No. 9 following a 48-20 victory over Arizona State, and Alabama rounded out the top ten at No. 10 after beating Kentucky 45-17.
Biggest climbers
BYU made the second-largest jump in the poll after a close win over conference rival Arizona, moving to No. 11. USC climbed to No. 12 after a 49-30 shootout win over Louisiana-Lafayette. Texas Tech stayed at No. 13, while Penn State and Tennessee both climbed into No. 14 and No. 15.
SMU sat at No. 16 after a 56-10 win over UC Davis, Utah took No. 17 following a 43-10 win over Arkansas, and Iowa held No. 18 after edging rival Iowa State 16-13.
Michigan produced the week's biggest climb, returning to No. 19 after falling out of the rankings entirely the previous week. The Wolverines had dropped out of the top 25 following a controversial Hail Mary win over Western Michigan, but a strong victory over Oklahoma put them back in.
Oregon's collapse
Missouri rounded out the top 20 after beating rival Kansas, just ahead of Oregon at No. 21. The Ducks, a preseason favorite to win the national championship, needed a narrow win over Boise State before losing 39-31 to unranked Oklahoma State, a result that sent them sliding 15 places from No. 6.
Oklahoma suffered the next-biggest fall of the week, dropping 13 spots from No. 11 to No. 24 after its loss to Michigan. Houston at No. 22, Louisville at No. 23 and Virginia at No. 25 completed the rankings.
Week 3 matchups to watch
Three ranked-versus-ranked games headline the coming week. No. 22 Houston visits in-state rival No. 13 Texas Tech in Lubbock on Friday evening, and No. 16 SMU faces No. 23 Louisville in Kentucky the following day in a matchup that could carry major implications for the Atlantic Coast Conference title race.
The week's biggest game pits No. 7 LSU against No. 8 Ole Miss, and it will mark Lane Kiffin's return to Mississippi months after he left the Ole Miss program, before the team's College Football Playoff berth.
