Thierry Henry criticised over Ballon d'Or stage remarks

Thierry Henry has faced sharp online criticism after aiming awkward onstage remarks at Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal and co-host Kate Scott at the Ballon d'Or.

The former France international served as master of ceremonies for the 70th Ballon d'Or gala on Monday, October 26, presenting the awards alongside broadcaster Scott. Viewers watching the ceremony quickly took to social media to condemn his conduct during two separate presentations, describing his remarks as inappropriate and embarrassing.

The annual gala, organised by France Football magazine, honours the best footballers in the world across multiple categories. While the identity of the main winner drew plenty of discussion, Henry became an unexpected focal point of the night following his interactions on stage with award recipients and his presenting partner.

Kopa Trophy exchange with Lamine Yamal

The first controversial moment arrived during the presentation of the Kopa Trophy, the honour awarded to the best young male player aged under 21. Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal, 19, collected the award on stage after being named young talent of the year for the third time.

As the Spanish international stepped up to receive the trophy, Henry decided to tease him in front of the audience. The presenter asked Yamal whether that was the award he really wanted, making a direct reference to the senior men's Ballon d'Or handed out at the end of the evening, for which the teenage attacker was among the leading contenders.

Although the remark drew laughter from the guests seated inside the auditorium, it was received very differently by viewers watching from home. Football fans on social media widely criticised the former Arsenal forward, calling the joke misplaced and awkward.

Online reaction turned harsh as users debated the exchange. Several viewers described the remark as completely disrespectful toward a young player celebrating an individual achievement, while others called the moment an absolute disgrace and pointed to a total lack of class from the host.

The Kopa Trophy, created in 2018, is named after former France playmaker Raymond Kopa, who won the Ballon d'Or in 1958. Past winners of the award include Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham and Gavi, establishing the prize as the global benchmark for emerging football talent.

Reaction to Kate Scott pronunciation error

A second incident later in the broadcast drew further frustration from television viewers. The exchange took place during the announcement of the Socrates Award, an accolade designed to honour footballers who commit time and resources to charitable causes and social initiatives.

Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka won the prize for his extensive community work. Before handing out the award, Scott stumbled over the pronunciation of the late Brazilian football icon who gives the trophy its name.

Henry intervened immediately to correct his co-host on air. He asked Scott what she meant by Socrates and told her that there were no philosophers present at the gala.

The interruption provoked an instant wave of indignation among viewers. Many watching the broadcast found Henry's response clumsy, blunt and even rude, arguing that he unnecessarily embarrassed his colleague in front of an international television audience.

The Socrates Award was introduced in 2022 to spotlight players who lead social change. It honours Socrates, the revered Brazil midfielder who captained his national team at the 1982 World Cup and was celebrated equally for his political activism and medical degree.

Ballon d'Or results and background

The controversy overshadowed parts of a historic ceremony that saw English striker Harry Kane lift the men's Ballon d'Or for the first time in his career. Kane's victory came as a disappointment to both Yamal and Kylian Mbappe, who had both entered the ceremony hoping to secure the top individual accolade.

Kane also became a talking point on social media during his victory speech, though in a much lighter tone. Viewers noticed that the England forward adjusted his suit roughly two hundred times while speaking on stage, with amused fans asking online whether he felt unsettled by the occasion.

Henry and Scott have worked together extensively on television, building a popular presenting rapport on American coverage of European football. Henry won the 1998 World Cup with France and remains one of the most celebrated figures in Premier League history, while Scott has fronted major international football tournaments for over a decade.

However, Henry's sharp banter proved far more divisive on a global stage where audiences expected a formal tone. The debate following the ceremony highlights how closely scrutinized every word remains at football's flagship awards evening.
