Tottenham Hotspur suffered a 2-0 home defeat against Newcastle United in the Premier League as second-half goals from Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa condemned head coach Roberto De Zerbi to a second consecutive loss without scoring a goal.
The defeat leaves Tottenham with zero points from their opening two league fixtures following a previous loss to Brentford. The result came despite a summer transfer window in which Tottenham spent more than £350 million to bring in eight new signings, alongside an optimistic message published in the matchday programme by chief executive Vinai Venkatesham.
Newcastle secured victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the third consecutive season, prompting departing home supporters to leave early in the rain when four minutes of added time were announced. Those remaining inside N17 greeted the final whistle with loud boos aimed at the team.
The defeat reignited concerns surrounding Tottenham's home record from last season, when the club won just three of 19 league fixtures on home soil and suffered 10 losses. Speaking on the eve of the match, De Zerbi had dismissed those concerns, noting that Tottenham had recorded one win and two draws in three home matches under his management.
Sluggish start and midfield battles
Tottenham made a slow start to the match, exemplified by captain Micky van de Ven in his first appearance since the World Cup. Van de Ven, who did not feature in pre-season and only returned to action off the bench in Wednesday's Carabao Cup tie, was caught out in the opening seconds as Elanga evaded him to create an early opportunity for Newcastle.
De Zerbi had brought Van de Ven back into the starting lineup specifically to counter the electric pace of Elanga. Other Tottenham players also struggled early on, including £100 million midfielder Sandro Tonali, who was knocked to the turf by a tackle from Newcastle's Joe Willock before delivering a poor pass that led to a yellow card for Van de Ven.
Newcastle dominated the opening 10 minutes of the contest following a positive start to their own campaign against Liverpool. Midfielder Nico Gonzalez delivered a composed performance on his debut for the visiting side as Newcastle controlled the early tempo.
First half chances and missing players
Tottenham gradually settled into the match midway through the first half and created several scoring opportunities. Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek produced saves to stop a shot from Mathys Tel cutting in from the left wing and a header from Jan Paul van Hecke following a corner kick.
Lewis Hall made a crucial defensive block to deny Pedro Porro after a miscued attempt from Tonali sliced across the penalty area. Porro, who played the first 68 minutes in an advanced right-wing role due to the absence of winger Savio, also sent a dipping left-footed volley over the crossbar.
Savio was ruled out of the squad after suffering muscle fatigue detected on Friday. The £85 million Brazilian winger had scored on his Tottenham debut against Charlton Athletic in the Carabao Cup, and De Zerbi stated he hopes to have him available for next week's fixture against Nottingham Forest.
Richarlison was another notable absentee from the Tottenham squad amid transfer speculation linking him as a potential inclusion in a move for Everton forward Iliman Ndiaye. Richarlison has become surplus to requirements following Thursday's completion of Omar Marmoush's transfer from Manchester City. The absence of both Brazilian players meant Brazil national team manager Carlo Ancelotti, who was watching from the director's box, saw no Brazilians take the pitch.
Defender Kevin Danso was also left out of the matchday squad as he remains the subject of a loan bid from Sunderland.
Second half goals seal Newcastle victory
New signing Omar Marmoush made his debut as an Egyptian international starting in attack, pulling Newcastle's central defenders out of position and linking play with the wings. Marmoush missed a clear chance late in the first half when he was left unmarked deep beyond the back post, volleying Andy Robertson's corner into the side netting.
Tottenham maintained pressure on either side of the interval, but Newcastle broke the deadlock through a sweeping team move. Gonzalez played a long pass to the left flank, where right-back Amar Dedic headed the ball down for Elanga, who turned and struck an exquisite finish inside the far post.
Newcastle doubled their lead shortly after through Wissa's sharp finishing inside the penalty area. Substitute Nick Woltemade had been on the pitch for less than a minute when he won a back-post header from a corner, nodding the ball into the six-yard box for Wissa to score with an acrobatic overhead kick past goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky.
Following the second goal, De Zerbi substituted Tonali for Dominic Solanke to ironic cheers from the traveling Newcastle supporters. Tonali shook hands with De Zerbi on the touchline, but Tottenham were unable to mount a comeback before the final whistle.
