Toulouse FC head coach Jens Berthel Askou will make his first Ligue 1 away appearance on Saturday, August 29, when his side travels to face Stade Brestois at the Stade Francis-Le Blé.
The Danish manager is seeking to bounce back following a 2-0 defeat at home against Olympique Lyonnais on Saturday, August 22, in Toulouse's opening match of the French top-flight season.
Although Saturday marks Askou's first visit to Brest's home stadium in Brittany, he previously encountered the Breton club in November 2024 while serving as assistant manager at Czech side Sparta Prague during a UEFA Champions League fixture.
At the time of that European meeting in Prague, Sparta Prague were returning to Europe's premier club competition after a 19-year absence, while Stade Brestois were making an enthusiastic debut in the tournament following a historic third-place finish in Ligue 1.
Brest had entered that Champions League match in peak form after securing two victories, including an emphatic 4-0 away win against Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg, alongside a draw against German side Bayer Leverkusen.
Askou recalled that Sparta Prague believed they were managing the match before Brest scored twice to inflict a 2-1 defeat, praising the French team for their clinical efficiency near the goal.
Brest squad continuity and key threats
Askou noted that while Brest are currently enduring a delicate period following the death of former head coach Eric Roy, the club maintains strong tactical continuity on the pitch.
He described Brest as a solid team, mentally and physically strong, that retains the core competitive qualities that drove their success during recent domestic and European campaigns.
The Toulouse head coach highlighted Brest forward Ludovic Ajorque as a major threat, describing him as a tall, powerful striker who poses significant danger if allowed space near the penalty area.
Askou added that key players including Romain Del Castillo, Brendan Chardonnet, Kamory Doumbia, and Kenny Lala remain central to Brest's identity and effective style of play.
Comparing his tactical setup, Askou pointed out that Sparta Prague operated in a 3-4-3 formation focused on direct play, counter-attacks, set pieces, and managing international matches with an experienced squad.
In contrast, Askou explained that his current Toulouse side is much younger and focused on controlling matches through ball possession and dictating tempo.
