The loss ended a summer preparation schedule for Toulouse that included a 1-1 draw against Rodez, a 2-1 victory over Real Sociedad, a 3-0 defeat against Elche, and a 1-0 win against Al Ain. Askou lined up Toulouse in a 4-2-3-1 formation against Hamburg, who finished 13th in the previous German championship season.
Hamburg opened the scoring in the fourth minute when Otto Stange scored a sublime goal, capitalizing on a lack of aggressiveness from the Toulouse defense to curl a shot into the top far corner from the left edge of the penalty box. Although occasionally lacking precision, Tapé provided reassurance at left-back while Dayann Methalie prepares to depart. Tapé nearly scored in the 63rd minute, but his shot, which appeared on target, was turned away by a Hamburg defender near the goal line.
Tapé combined frequently with Ilyas Azizi, who started one position higher on the left wing. Nicknamed Le Pitchoun, Azizi missed almost all of last season due to a torn cruciate ligament and remains in search of match rhythm and confidence.
Venezuelan midfielder Cristian Casseres showed no lack of rhythm or confidence, acting as the team commanding figure. Casseres delivered a complete performance built on physical impact, forward driving, and ball recovery, demonstrating that he would be difficult to replace should he depart before September 1. Alongside him in midfield, German player Niklas Schmidt suffered by comparison.
