Trabzonspor have been eliminated from the UEFA Europa League after Hungarian side Ferencvaros delivered a 4-0 defeat on Thursday night to secure a 5-0 victory on aggregate.
Mohamed Salah was substituted during the second half after Trabzonspor were reduced to nine men, while head coach Fatih Tekke had his post-match resignation rejected by the Turkish club's board.
Early red card and Hungarian dominance
Trabzonspor entered the second leg aiming to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg in their play-off tie. However, the Turkish side faced an uphill task early in the match when summer signing Ruslan Malinovskyi was shown a red card.
Ferencvaros took advantage of the extra player when Callum O'Dowda extended the Hungarian team's aggregate lead with a 19th-minute opening goal on the night.
Marius Corbu doubled the lead for Ferencvaros shortly after half-time, placing the host team 2-0 ahead on the night and 3-0 up on aggregate.
Any remaining hope of a Trabzonspor recovery was ended when another summer arrival, Sidny Cabral, received a second yellow card in the 57th minute to leave the visitors with nine players.
Bamidele Yusuf subsequently scored from the penalty spot to increase the Ferencvaros lead to three goals on the night.
With Trabzonspor facing a heavy loss and their Europa League campaign effectively over, Salah was taken off just after the hour mark.
Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana, playing his second season on loan at Trabzonspor, conceded four goals on Thursday after Krisztian Lisztes scored a fourth for Ferencvaros in the closing minutes of the game.
Summer spending and squad rebuilding
The failure to qualify for the Europa League league phase represents a major setback for Trabzonspor following substantial financial investment in their squad during the summer transfer window.
Trabzonspor secured the signature of Egyptian international forward Mohamed Salah after he agreed to terminate the final year of his contract with Premier League club Liverpool. The Turkish side committed to paying Salah an annual salary of £8.5 million alongside a £6 million signing fee.
Salah has made four appearances for Trabzonspor since completing his move. The former Liverpool winger scored his first goals for the club last week when he recorded a brace in a 2-0 victory against Basaksehir.
In addition to Salah, Trabzonspor strengthened their team by signing midfielder Fabinho, who previously won major titles alongside Salah at Liverpool, while also bringing in Ukrainian midfielder Ruslan Malinovskyi and retaining goalkeeper Andre Onana on loan.
Fatih Tekke resignation blocked by board
Following the defeat, Trabzonspor head coach Fatih Tekke announced his resignation during a post-match media conference.
"We had a very sad night, of course, the reason is me and my team," Tekke said, as reported by Fanatik. "It was a sad night for both our country and our community. It looked like it was going to be a positive match right up until the red card."
Tekke added: "As a result, we failed to qualify for the Europa League. For the past 18 months, day and night, my team and I have been thinking about what we can do to improve just a little bit more. The team will be much, much better, that's for sure."
"I won't drag this out, effective immediately, I am resigning from my 18-month tenure," Tekke stated. "I feel I have the right to impose this punishment on myself."
Despite Tekke's public announcement, Trabzonspor released an official statement confirming that the board of directors had refused to accept his departure.
"Fatih Tekke has decided to resign due to the emotional intensity caused by the defeat following the Ferencvaros match," the Trabzonspor statement read. "As the Trabzonspor Board of Directors, our Fatih Tekke's resignation decision has not been accepted. Fatih Tekke continues in his role and will be at the helm of our team in the Amedspor match we will play in the league."
European campaign next steps
Following their exit from the Europa League play-offs, Trabzonspor will now drop into the UEFA Conference League for the upcoming season.
The Turkish club will learn their group phase opponents when the UEFA Conference League draw takes place today.
