Tranmere travelled to Port Vale's ground in Stoke-on-Trent with a depleted squad. Only one goalkeeper, Harrison Male, was available for the match after regular starter Luke McGee was rested to recover from a hip injury. The club chose to make the trip without a substitute goalkeeper in the squad.
Injury forces defender into goal
Tranmere were trailing 0-1 when Male was forced off with an injury in the 53rd minute. With no specialist goalkeeper left on the bench, the team turned to Faulkner, who had been playing at centre-back, to take over between the posts.

Speaking in the mixed zone after the match, Tranmere manager Darrell Clarke said a lot had happened during the game. He said losing the goalkeeper had been a big blow, but praised his players' resilience and experience, giving Faulkner a special mention.
Clarke said the situation had not been part of the team's plans in case something happened to their goalkeeper, but that he took responsibility for it and that it was no one's fault. He explained that he had not called up a second goalkeeper because McGee had only just returned to the field, and that he had not wanted to spend the money unnecessarily. He said he had believed the squad could get through a few matches in that situation, but that this had not proved to be the case.
Echoes of Mamadou Sakho's stint in goal
The episode recalled a similar situation involving Paris Saint-Germain defender Mamadou Sakho 13 years earlier. On the final matchday of the 2012-2013 Ligue 1 season, Sakho had to go in goal after goalkeeper Ronan Le Crom was sent off in the 81st minute against Lorient.
PSG, who had already been crowned champions by that point, came into the match with the outcome already effectively settled in their favour, and the France international came on smiling at Lorient's Stade du Moustoir. Unlike Faulkner, Sakho was unable to keep a clean sheet, conceding a late penalty to Arnaud Le Lan, though PSG went on to win the match 3-1.
