President Donald Trump voiced support for FIFA president Gianni Infantino on Monday in a post on Truth Social, calling any attempt to remove the Swiss-Italian official a "terrible mistake."
Trump wrote that Infantino is fantastic, having just presided over the most successful World Cup ever, four times more successful, and that if he leaves it will never be as successful or profitable again.
Pressure over commercial rights plan
Infantino has faced criticism since last month's failure of a plan to launch FIFA Forward Enterprise, which would have sold part of the commercial rights to tournaments like the World Cup to private investors to raise billions of dollars.
CONCACAF, which governs football in North America, Central America and the Caribbean, threatened to boycott FIFA tournaments until it receives a promise that no similar scheme will be proposed in the future.
