Unicaja Málaga power forward Tyson Pérez is racing to be fit for his team's Liga Endesa opening match away at Real Madrid on Sunday as he continues to suffer from a heel issue. The Spanish-Dominican player has been unable to train normally with the rest of the squad due to persistent discomfort in his foot.

Both the club's medical staff and Pérez himself are attempting everything possible to resolve the problem in time for the trip to Madrid.

Pérez confirmed that he is eager to overcome the irritation so that he can perform at the level he expects of himself. The 30-year-old explained that he is assessing every option to ensure he returns in the best possible physical shape for the upcoming campaign.

Heel Bone Growth Causing Discomfort

Detailing the exact nature of the ailment, Pérez stated that a small extra bone has developed on his calcaneus, the heel bone, which is the direct source of the pain. He emphasized that the injury is entirely bone-related and does not involve any muscle tears or structural damage.

The calcaneus is the largest tarsal bone in the human foot, bearing body weight during walking and jumping. Small bony projections or spurs on the heel can press against surrounding tissues during intense athletic movements, leading to localized inflammation that limits performance on the basketball court.

Pérez admitted that despite putting in maximum effort and working harder than anyone throughout the summer break, the recovery process has not yielded the desired results so far.

His availability for Sunday's season opener remains uncertain. Pérez revealed that he will undergo a fitness test in training on Wednesday to assess how his heel responds, after which the medical staff and coaching team will decide how to proceed.

Heavy Pre-Season Defeat Fresh in Memory

The opening fixture carries added significance for Unicaja following a heavy defeat against the same opponent earlier this month. On September 12, Unicaja suffered a 113-74 loss to Real Madrid at the Palacio Martín Carpena in Málaga during the pre-season Trofeo Costa del Sol tournament.

Pérez acknowledged that the squad is highly motivated to move past that difficult day and prove themselves in official competition. He noted that the players are fully focused on the need to play with toughness and physical aggression from the opening tip-off.

Describing Real Madrid as a large and physical EuroLeague side, Pérez stressed that Unicaja must match their opponents' size and intensity if they hope to secure a victory on opening day.

Season Expectations and Next Steps

The Liga Endesa is Spain's top-flight professional basketball competition and is widely regarded as the strongest domestic league in Europe. Competing at the highest level requires maximum roster depth, making Pérez's health a priority for Unicaja as they begin a demanding domestic schedule.

Born in the Dominican Republic, the 30-year-old forward represents Spain on the international stage and plays a crucial interior role for the Málaga-based club. His ability to anchor the paint and provide frontcourt physicality will be key against Real Madrid's formidable roster.

Following Wednesday's planned fitness assessment, Unicaja will determine whether Pérez can travel with the team to Madrid or if he will require further rest before making his league debut.
