UEFA has announced it will maintain its planned boycott of FIFA competitions despite FIFA President Gianni Infantino dropping proposals to privatize major tournaments.
In a newly released statement, UEFA said its member associations established clear conditions for participating in FIFA events. The organization stated that FIFA had to withdraw proposals to sell major competitions and provide assurances that similar attempts would never happen again.
UEFA assessed that those required guarantees have not been provided. The European governing body added that it has lost confidence in the presidency of Infantino.
Future Tournaments and Elections
The upcoming Women's Under 20 World Cup, scheduled for next month in Poland, will demonstrate whether UEFA intends to execute its boycott threat.
The announcement follows action by the FIFA Council, which confirmed its backing for Infantino from Morocco just hours earlier. However, UEFA members maintain that Infantino should not run for re-election as FIFA president in 2027 and are seeking his departure from office.
