Universitario de Deportes beat rivals Alianza Lima 2-1 in second-half stoppage time on Saturday at the Estadio Alejandro Villanueva, known to fans as Matute, to move to the top of Peru's Torneo Clausura 2026 alone.
Alex Valera put Universitario ahead in the first half. Federico Girotti equalized for Alianza Lima after the break, before a defensive mix-up handed Lisandro Alzugaray the winner deep into injury time.
How the goals went in
Universitario broke the deadlock in the 16th minute. Gianluca Lapadula beat Renzo Garcés on the counter-attack and squared the ball for Valera, who finished for the opening goal of the night.
Alianza Lima leveled in the 77th minute, when Jairo Vélez set up Girotti to make it 1-1.
The decisive moment came in the seventh minute of first-half... second-half stoppage time. A communication error between goalkeeper Alejandro Duarte and defender Gianfranco Chávez let Alzugaray in to score the winner, sealing a 2-1 victory for Universitario. Alzugaray was booked a minute later, and the match ended shortly afterward.
A tense, physical clasico
The match turned feisty just before halftime, when a brawl broke out between players from both sides in first-half stoppage time, drawing substitutes from both benches onto the pitch to help break it up.
Six players were booked in total: Universitario's Matías Di Benedetto, Alianza Lima coach Pablo Guede, Alianza's Federico Girotti, Universitario's Horacio Calcaterra, Alianza's Renzo Garcés and Alzugaray. Alianza also came close to scoring more than once, with Vélez's overhead-kick attempt in the 47th minute and a Garcés header that struck the post in the 57th minute both going unrewarded.
Universitario's changes included Alzugaray on for Lapadula in the 70th minute, Horacio Calcaterra on for Jorge Murrugarra in the 72nd, and Héctor Fértoli on for Piero Quispe in the 77th. Alianza Lima brought on Alan Cantero for Alessandro Burlamaqui, Gianfranco Chávez for Mateo Antoni, and late on Luis Ramos for Eryc Castillo.
Team news before kickoff
Alianza Lima coach Pablo Guede started Alejandro Duarte in goal behind a back four of Luis Advíncula, Garcés, Antoni and Marco Huamán, with Esteban Pavez, Fernando Gaibor and Burlamaqui in midfield and Vélez, Castillo and Girotti up front.
Universitario's Héctor Cúper fielded Diego Romero in goal, with Aldair Fara, Adrián Riveros and Di Benedetto at the back, Jhilmar Polo, Murrugarra, Jairo Concha, Quispe and Segundo Inga in midfield, and Lapadula partnering Valera up front.
Both squads had key absentees. Alianza Lima was without Paolo Guerrero and Nico Díaz through injury, while Kevin Quevedo, Piero Cari, Josué Estrada and Cristian Carbajal were left out for tactical reasons.
Universitario left out Juan Manuel Requena, José Rivera, Jordan Guivin and Bryan Reyna. According to journalist Gustavo Peralta, none of the four were injured and Cúper's decision was purely tactical. Edison Flores returned to the squad list for the match.
Peru's biggest rivalry
Alianza Lima and Universitario have met 377 times. Alianza holds the historical edge with 143 wins to Universitario's 128, with 106 draws between them.
Before Saturday, Alianza Lima had not beaten Universitario at Matute since November 3, 2018, when goals from Gonzalo Godoy and Mauricio Affonso secured the win. Six players currently registered with Alianza Lima and Universitario have played for both clubs at some point: Bryan Reyna, Aldo Corzo, Jairo Concha, Jairo Vélez, Kevin Quevedo and Josué Estrada.
Build-up to the match
Universitario arrived at the clasico off a 2-2 draw at home to Comerciantes Unidos, while Alianza Lima had gone three matches without a win, having drawn 1-1 with Juan Pablo II in their previous outing. Bookmakers including Betsson and Bet365 had listed Alianza Lima as slight favorites before kickoff.
Ahead of kickoff, walls outside the stadium that had been damaged in an earlier incident were repaired, and Alianza Lima issued a set of guidelines and restrictions for fans attending the match.
The match was refereed by Micke Palomino, with Michael Orue and Stephen Atoche as assistants, Alexander Zapata as fourth official and Alejandro Villanueva operating the VAR. The fixture, the ninth round of the Torneo Clausura, the second of Peru's two annual Liga 1 tournaments, kicked off at 8pm local time and was broadcast on L1 Max.
