Vasco da Gama and Fluminense drew 0-0 on Saturday in the first leg of their Copa do Brasil round of 16 tie. The second leg will decide who advances to the quarterfinals, set for Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. at the Maracana, with the winner learning its next opponent by draw.
First half chances
Fluminense had the better opportunities in the first half. Hercules created the first danger after a poor clearance from Leo Jardim, and Savarino later forced a good save from the goalkeeper. In the 33rd minute, Canobbio broke away down the right and struck a cross-shot that narrowly missed. The biggest chance came in the 42nd minute, when Canobbio combined with John Kennedy, whose cross-shot was again saved by Leo Jardim. Vasco did not test goalkeeper Fabio in the opening half.
Second half and attendance
John Kennedy forced another big save from Leo Jardim eight minutes into the second half. Vasco created its first clear chance in the 55th minute, when Paulo Henrique headed the ball toward Tche-Tche, who headed it wide. In the 80th minute, Andres Gomez also went close with a header. A crowd of 36,608 attended the match at the Maracana.
