Vitória Boss Jair Ventura Denies Provoking Botafogo

Vitória head coach Jair Ventura apologised to Botafogo but denied intentionally provoking the opposition after jumping over the ball near the touchline during a Campeonato Brasileiro match at the Barradão stadium in Salvador on Sunday, 16 August 2026.

The incident in stoppage time triggered a confrontation between players and coaching staff, prompting match officials to invoke the Vini Jr. Law after Botafogo player Arthur Cabral approached Ventura with a hand covering his mouth.

The clash unfolded during the final moments of the second half when Botafogo midfielder Santi Rodríguez kicked the ball out of play toward the touchline with excessive force. Ventura leaped over the incoming ball while appearing to simulate a header, an action that immediately drew an angry reaction from the visiting side.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Ventura addressed the controversy by highlighting his long-standing ties to Botafogo. The manager said he spent ten years at the Rio de Janeiro club, where he developed his career, and insisted he would never disrespect any football institution.

Ventura added that he did not view his gesture as a sign of disrespect toward Botafogo. While maintaining that he had no intention of offending anyone, the Vitória boss offered a public apology to those who found his movement disrespectful.

League standings and upcoming fixtures

The match was played at Vitória's home ground, the Barradão stadium in Salvador, state of Bahia. Botafogo, based in Rio de Janeiro, are regular competitors in the Campeonato Brasileiro, Brazil's top professional football division. The anti-discrimination protocol known as the Vini Jr. Law is enforced in Brazilian football to regulate player conduct during heated on-field altercations.

The victory secured three vital points for Vitória, lifting the team to 12th place in the Brasileirão standings with a total of 29 points. Vitória return to action on Sunday, 23 August 2026, at 4:00 p.m. Brasília time, when they host local rivals Bahia at the Barradão.
