West Ham United blew a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 against Burnley at Turf Moor in their opening EFL Championship match on Sunday.

Goals from Max Kilman and debutant Manor Solomon put the Hammers in control before Dutch striker Zian Flemming struck twice late on to rescue a point for the hosts.

The result came in West Ham's first fixture outside of the English top flight for 14 years following their relegation from the Premier League last season.

West Ham took the lead in the 10th minute when Kilman headed home an inswinging corner delivered by captain Jarrod Bowen, who stayed loyal to the club this summer rather than seeking a transfer away.

During the match, travelling West Ham supporters voiced their frustration by airing vicious chants against former co-chairman David Sullivan.

Despite not playing particularly well, the visitors doubled their advantage in the 72nd minute. Mohamadou Kante broke down the right-hand side, reached the byline, and delivered a low cross for Solomon to slam into the net from six yards out.

Burnley comeback and late drama

Burnley refused to buckle and fought back during a dramatic final quarter of the match as Flemming took center stage. The striker had already proved a constant threat to the Hammers' defence, nodding against a post and seeing another header cleared off the line before the hour mark.

The Hammers, without playing particularly well, found themselves 2-0 up in the 72nd minute - but capitulated during a dramatic final quarter

The hosts pulled a goal back in the 83rd minute when Flemming converted a penalty awarded after Ollie Scarles committed a clumsy challenge on Marcus Edwards.

In the second minute of stoppage time, Flemming completed the comeback by rifling home a low right-footed shot to equalize at 2-2 and spark wild celebrations among the home fans.

Managerial reaction and transfer frustration

West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo reflected on a dark mood after watching his team surrender the victory. The Hammers dropped 20 points from winning positions last season, and Nuno failed to save the side from relegation after taking charge.

"It’s disappointing," Nuno said after the match. "We had a very good first half and when we scored the second goal we should have done better to get the result. There are many things that we have to improve on."

The manager's post-match disappointment followed a live national radio interview on Saturday in which he delivered a prophetic warning about the challenges ahead. Speaking 24 hours before kick-off, Nuno was far from enthusiastic as he addressed boardroom uncertainty, pressure as promotion favourites, and the need for new signings.

Nuno had stressed that resilience and collective desire were essential for navigating the 46-game Championship season. Having named several academy products on his bench at Turf Moor, he reiterated his call for squad strengthening.

"We need more players - especially offensively," Nuno added.

Flemming, who caused the Hammers¿ defence untold problems all afternoon, scored twice to level matters at the death

His comments came despite West Ham setting a new EFL transfer record over the weekend by signing Celtic midfielder Arne Engels for £22m.

Burnley delight and Flemming speculation

In stark contrast to Nuno, new Burnley manager Nicky Hayen was delighted after celebrating his 46th birthday on the touchline. The relatively unknown Belgian coach praised his team's character in securing a point.

"We played a good game and showed a lot of courage and resilience so I’m really satisfied," Hayen said. "We wanted to make a connection with the fans and bring the energy to the stadium for 95 minutes. That’s exactly what we did and the fans supported us - you could feel the adrenaline."

Flemming, who scored 12 Premier League goals last season, remains the subject of transfer speculation before the transfer window closes. Addressing whether the striker might be sold before the deadline, Hayen joked about his performance.

"Well, it didn’t help that he scored twice today!" Hayen smiled, before adding: "But we have the ambition to go up and we showed resilience get a point - yet maybe we deserved more."

Match details and team line-ups

Referee Josh Smith issued five yellow cards during the contest. West Ham goalkeeper Hermansen, Kante, Castellanos, and substitute Diouf were booked for the visitors, while Flemming received Burnley's only yellow card.

Nicky Hayen lined up Burnley in a 3-4-2-1 formation with Weiss in goal behind Walker, Alleyne, and Humphreys. Sonne, Mejbri, Raghouber, and Bruun Larsen formed the midfield, behind Edwards, Ramsey, and Flemming up front. Substitutes Amdouni, Laurent, Broja, Lucas Pires, and Tresor all featured off the bench.

Nuno deployed West Ham in a 4-4-2 setup with Hermansen behind a back four of Walker-Peters, Mavropanos, Kilman, and Scarles. Bowen, Orford, Solomon, and Kante started in midfield, with Pablo and Castellanos in attack. Ward-Prowse replaced Pablo at half-time, while Diouf and Veltman were introduced late on.

The EFL Championship is the second tier of English professional football, where 24 teams compete over a 46-game regular season for promotion to the Premier League. Burnley's home ground, Turf Moor, has hosted the Lancashire club since 1883.
