The Women's National Basketball Players Association issued a statement addressing the demonization of transgender people after comments by Indiana Fever player Sophie Cunningham. The players' union stated that it represents more than 200 individual people with different lived experiences, cultures, lifestyles, and opinions.
The union emphasized values of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. It stated that these values unite the union and allow it to protect women's sports while creating transformational change.
The WNBPA warned against hostile behavior surrounding the issue. "Hate, abuse, and demonization of any person or group of people, including transgender people, only fuel fear, division, and harm," the union said. "We will continue to have hard conversations. But we will not be used as political pawns."
The union urged fans and players to report abusive posts online and notify arena security about violent or hateful behavior during games. It also asked supporters to tell elected officials at home to strengthen Title IX.
Comments by WNBA players
The debate intensified after Sophie Cunningham expressed her views in an ESPN piece published on July 21. Cunningham said that "young girls... shouldn't have to go against biological men."
Her statements divided fans, players, and coaches across the league. Pro-trans and anti-trans protests subsequently took place outside several WNBA arenas. Riley Gaines and Stephen A. Smith seemingly sided with Cunningham, while other individuals criticized and booed the Fever star on the court.
Golden State Valkyries star Gabby Williams took a contrasting position in a recent interview. "I think trans rights, right now, is our new battle," Williams said, adding that trans rights are being stripped away amid discourse surrounding trans athletes.
"I would welcome a trans athlete on my team or against my team, anytime," Williams added. "I don't think it's a problem in the world."
Declarations from former NBA players
Two former NBA players announced on Friday that they intend to declare for the 2027 WNBA Draft. Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White both stated their intentions to enter the draft following the ongoing debate.
Royce White, a former first-round NBA draft pick who played three games for the Sacramento Kings, spoke to Fox News Digital on Friday. White, who is a candidate for the Republican Senate nomination in Minnesota, said he is now transgender and wants to join Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham on the court next season.
"I'm transgender. I'm a woman. I identify as sometimes identifying as a woman for purpose of basketball, professional basketball, so I'll be declaring for the WNBA draft in 2027 as well," White said. "I think I'd be unstoppable. But I'm a team-first guy. I'm a pass-first kind of player. I do the little things. I led my team in all five major stat categories at Iowa State University, so I do a little bit of everything. I'll do whatever the coach needs me to do. I'll do whatever the girls need me to do."
White insisted that only a definitive statement from the WNBA about "guys with a pair of b**** playing in the Women's Association" could stop him. "I don't want to be discriminated against," White continued. "I want fair treatment. I'm a young black, hopefully United States Senator, that would like a fair chance to participate as a sometimes-identifying-as-a-transgender-woman athlete." He also vowed to wear a wig while playing and said WNBA players will have "nightmares... and they should" about competing against him.
Social media post and video declaration
Enes Kanter Freedom, a 6-foot-10 former player for the New York Knicks and Boston Celtics, shared his draft declaration in a social media video post on Friday. "After careful consideration and reviewing the current eligibility guidelines, I'm officially declaring myself a @WNBA prospect," Freedom said.
"If simply declaring who you are is all that's required, then I meet every single requirement necessary to compete in the WNBA," Freedom added. "My team and I have carefully examined the WNBA's eligibility criteria and governing framework surrounding self-identification and inclusion. Based on the current guidelines, I can and am officially declaring my eligibility for the upcoming WNBA draft in April 2027."
Freedom acknowledged that his presence on the court would stir up strong opinions but said he is not present to mock or disrespect any community. "I'm simply asking that the current rules be applied equally to everyone - the rules that represent the very values many WNBA players and coaches have publicly advocated for," Freedom said. "My team and I are prepared to ensure these guidelines are applied equally, consistently, and without exception, and I look forward to the #WNBA honoring its stated principles. See you at training camp."
League leadership and coach reactions
The ongoing debate has drawn reactions from coaches and commentators across the sport. Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve recently wore a t-shirt displaying the message "Trans Kids Belong."
